Festival wins grant
for scholarships
This year Sisters Folk
Festival’s Americana Arts
Outreach Scholarship
(APAOS) fund received over
$15,000 in grant awards. The
fund provides arts-related
scholarships for children in
Sisters Country. Funding came
from foundations, businesses
and individual donors, all
helping to expand the program
and reach more children.
Sisters Folk Festival Inc.
(SFF) and Family Access
Network (FAN) formed a part-
nership in 2011, and the fund
has grown steadily.
Last month, two large
grants were awarded to SFF.
The Cow Creek Umpqua
Indian Foundation provided
$5,000 for low-income chil-
dren to have access to the arts
in Sisters. Also in December,
Oregon Arts Commission
and the National Endowment
for the Arts provided an Arts
Build Communities grant of
$4,050.
“We’re nearing our goal
of doubling the dollar amount
in the fund and the number of
children we can serve,” said
SFF Development Director
Katy Yoder.

Voting begins
for art awards

Voting began Wednesday,
January 14, for the People’s
Choice Awards in the Friends
of the Sisters Library (FOSL)
10th annual art exhibit at the
library.
Ballots are available in the
library’s community room
and votes may be cast for up
to three works of art. The art
is on display throughout the
library, so be sure to browse
all the rooms.
The final opportunity for
voting and announcement of
the three winners will take
place at the artists’ reception

hors d’oeurves will be served
as the public meets the art-
ists and views their work.
The exhibit will be on display
until February 26. Some 40 to
50 artists are exhibiting art-
work in many different media,
including sculpture, fiber art,
all types of painting, jewelry,
collage, woodworking and
photography.
Last year’s opening recep-
tion was very well attended,
with many votes cast for
the eventual three People’s
Choice winners: Mark

Prospective singers are
invited to come to Shepherd
of the Hills Lutheran Church
in Sisters at 6:30 p.m. on
Monday, January 26, sit
down with the section they
want to sing in, and have at
it. No auditions and no musi-
cal background is necessary;
the chorale is open to sopra-
nos, altos, tenors, basses —
and contraltos, counter ten-
ors, and bassos.
Neither are there any age
restrictions. There are a lot
of gray-haired singers in the
chorale, but they may have
more time on their hands
than “youngsters.” If you’re
a frustrated alto with three
beautiful children — and you
really want to sing — call
grandma and grandpa and
ask them to share their tal-
ents with the kids on Monday
nights so you can share yours
with the chorale.
This season’s repertoire
is going to contain a vari-
ety of pieces. There will be
a Memorial Day medley
with such numbers as “This
is My Country,” and maybe
“Yankee-Doodle Dandy,”
plus a variety of musical the-
ater pieces such as “Phantom
of the Opera.” Over the
years the chorale has been
performing in Sisters, spiri-
tual and gospel music has
become a favorite, so there’ll
be a few numbers in that area
as well.
Paul Bennett, well-known
local artist and wonderful
tenor, has been singing with
the chorale for two years and
feels this way about how
he shares his talent: “Choir
members come from a wide
range of musical back-
grounds. What we have most
in common, however, is that
we hold music close to our
hearts. Singing together is
an expression of that love
and, though it takes work to
learn all the parts, once it all
comes together it can be a
deeply satisfying experience.
Irene is fun to work with
and brings a rich musical
background to share. We’re
quite fortunate to have such
talent in our little town of
Sisters.”
