With sen tence continued in the municipal court following an admission that he entered the apartments of Misses Mollie and Jennie Smith during their absence, and in gratifying a peculiar mania, slashed their clothing to pieces, M. 11. Pluck, aged 23, of Baltimore, reputed heir to millions, today faces a federal charge of attempting to use the United States mails to defraud. Acting Municipal Judge Stadter con tinued Black's sentence after his mother promised to reimburse the Misses Smith for tho damage to their clothing. Black was taken into custody by federal officers as he was leaving the! municipal building and later released on $1,000 bonds pending a .hearing. Tho federal charge grew out of a let ter, apparently signed by Miss Mollie Smith, that Black is alleged to have written to Mrs. Jlaird of Kansas City, asking for $25. As Mrs. Baird was in San Francisco visiting the fair with the Smith sisters, when the letter reached her, she turned it over to the postal inspectors. Black is said to have been suffering from a nitiinia for destroying feminine apparel for some time and was on a tour of the world with his mother in hopes of ridding himself of tho obses sion when arrested here. The buving of these stocks was based! partly on the splendid crop showing ami the expectation that tho western roads will soon get nn increase in freight rates from the interstate com-; merce commission, One of the most interesting develop-' ments was a sharp rise in the stocks of railroads which penetrate the western! grain country. They showed generikl gains, with the best buying seen in weeks pnst. There wns good demand for I'mon Pacific, St. Paul, Northern Pacific and Southern Pacific, Industries were strong end active with new high marks for several "war stocks." Steel shares-nttrncted great attention, B rise in Vnited Stntes steel being based partly on reports that the common dividend was to be resumed.
