Oregon City, Or., July 31. Henry
May of Cams came Into town with a
startling story concerning the dis
appearance of Alvln Crowe, who
owns a sawmill near Cams. Mr.
May states that Crowo left tho mill
early last Tuesday morning and nb
solutely nothing has been heard of
him since that time. Tho belief pre
vails among tho employes of tho mill
that their employer hns committed
suicide, and they have made an ex
haustive search through tho timber
around tho mill, but nil efforts to
find a trace of the whereabouts of
Crowo have been fruitless. The
missing man left his personal ef
fects at the mill and' went away in
his shirt sleeves ns his coat was loll
behind. He took a razor, but no
strop or soap.
Crowe's business affairs are un
derstood to bo in good condition
and no motive can bo ndvnnced for
his strange and sudden disappear
ance. Ho was a man of exceedingly
temperate habits and was Intensely
religious. His wife and two daugh
ters live in Nova Scotia and ho came
hero about four months ago, invest
ing in tho mill property. Ho also
owns 100 acres of good timber land
In Clackamas county nnd 400 acres
In Nova Scotin.
Crowo recently hnd a severe fall,
striking on his head, nnd this may
have affected his mind, though It
wns not any way apparent. He was
usually well dressed.
Portland, Or., July 31. Harry
W. Miller and Frank Klncnrt, who
were sentenced to ono year's Im
prisonment at McNeil's Island, were
taken from tho county jnll yesterday
put on tho train and started on their
way to tho lonely prison on the
sound.
A broken-hearted woman with a
babe on her breast met them as they
descended tho jnll steps. With piti
ful cries and tears she threw her
arms around KIncart's nock, clinging
to him as If to hold him bnck from
the fate that waited him. But there
wns no time to lose, she wns 'pushed
quickly aside and with a passlonato
spoken goodbye she hurried away.
The woman was KIncart's wife
and tho babe his child.
Miller nnd Klncart were keonly
disappointed at being bundled off to
McNeil's island. They hnd been told
that they would not go for several
days, at least. In fact, they are
pretty confident of something turn
ing up In tho way of a motion for a
now tilal or somo other legal quip
that would save them .from going at
all. They, therefore, took It hard
when they wero led from their colls
and Deputy United States Marshal
Bushoy appeared to slip a pair of
handcuffs about tho wrists (if each.
Bushey hmrlud his prisoners to the
8:30 train, on which the three loft
for the north.
