Washington, Sept 14. Voorheea
said to a representative of the Associated
Press today that be wasitill determined
to press the repeal bill to as early con
sideration as possible. "I have every
reason to believe wo shall be able to
reach a vote in a comparatively short
time," said he.
When pressed to say how long the
time would bo, he named two weekB as
the limit for debate. Voorheea did not
believe there would be any amendment
of bill, and bo was nf tbe opinion that
silver men would show greater strength
in the vote In opposition to a straight
repeal bill than upon any other propos
ition.

changed, with very light trading by
brewers, btwlsets mostly in small lots.
New state seedlings are quoted at 23

Good Hop Report. David Guthrie,
who Is a member of the stalo board of
agriculture, came up from his bop farm
in Polk county today. He commenced
picking yesterday And reports no dam
age from the raln He has seen no
signs of lice nor mould In bis nor bis
neighbors' yards. Ills first floor comes

25 per cent, better than last year. O.
A. Cone, a bop raiser from the eastern
part of tbe countyj was lu tho city yes
terday. He has ISO-pickers in his yard
and reports the quality of his bops good.
The Hop Crop. The statement pub
lished that Meeker estimates tho Ore
gon hop crop at only 15,000 bales, is
unfounded. No one can show any au
thorized statement to that 0 fleet, made
by any man by tho name of Meeker,
who is oho of the hop Mockers of Puy
allup. They have never placed Oregon
below 30,000 bales, and the state will
easier exceed than fall below that figure.
Hops Not Injured. In talks with
numerous hop growers todiy, we have
gatberod enough information to be sat
isfied that tbe crop has not been injured
to any groat extent by the rains. It Is
to be hoped that the remaining harvest
of this crop, can be finished in fair

Watervlller-Times, Sept. 8: Outside
of a few lots of '03 hops, late crop, at
20o there has been no business to speak
of on this market. Tho price for tbe
now crop has not yet been fixed, the
majority of growers und dealers pre
ferring to wait until the samples can
bo takeu from tbe bales.
The week has been a busy ono In tbe
yards aud the weather has been favor
uble for picking except Thursday nftor
noon when it rained bard and stopped
work. Many will finish this week and
all will get through with good weather
early next week. Every grower ac
knowledges that the quicker the hops
are oft tho vines the better. They are
not improving by standing although
the way they have withstood tbe effects
of stormy weather and attacks of lice
and mould Is quite remarkable.
It is true there are lice and mould In
many of the yards but, considering all
things, they aro holding their own
well aud In tho yards where the proper
picking Is insisted upon, it is believed
a good sample will bejbown.
In regard to tbe yield tbero are vari
ous reports but without doubt tho yield
about Watervlllo Is less than last year.
It Is said that the yards that were light
last year are heavy this and vice vena.
Tho Cooperstown Republican of
Sept. Oth says: There Is nothing doing
in tbe market. Dealers have been
quietly awaiting orders, Tbero Is no
effort made to purchase tbe new crop.
Growers and dealers alike agree to wait
until the bops are picked und cured. A
few bales here and there aggregating
25, of this year's growth have been
picked up at 0021 Jo. From corres
pondents throughout the bop district,
and from personal Inquiry of growers,
it appears that tbe crop of this year will
fall oil from last year fully 15 per cent.
While the storm of ten days a?o did
considerable damage, it is not nearly so
bad as effecting the quality of the hop
as has been represented by bop buyers
here to tbelr New York bouse. In do
ing tbls the buyer for tbe time being
not only injures tbe grower but his own
Interests. In the main a fair to good
quality of hops will be harvested; the
poor ones are by fur the smallest por
tion of tbe yield.

Fort Monroe, Va., Sept. 14. The
cruiser Detroit this morning sailed for
Rio Janeiro to protect American Inter
ests, London, Sept. 14. A dispatch from
Rio de Janeiro says that an attack of
the rebel fleet on tho forts began at 0
o'clock, Tho garrison of tho largest
and strongest fort has declared for tbe
rebels. . Tho bombardment oftbotown
began at 11 o'clock, The, town has u
desoluto appearance. People who are
compelled to remain are greatly oxclted.

ment has received a dispatch from Rio
Janeiro that a British gunboad was to
leavo the bay to warn all incoming ves
sels to stay oil the coast until tbo result
of tbo bombardment Is learned. Much
anxiety Is felt in Bio as to the fate of
tho city In the ovent of tho success of
tbo rebels, for, In splto of the dispatches
sent by the government, tbero are
doubts as to tho loyalty of tho forts In
tbo bay. It is asserted the garrisons
will exchango a few shots, haul down
