Taking nn Indian and Tom Quigloy, well armed, to stand guard outside, tho dep uty proceeded to tho place. Clurk 8011 asked tho Indians at tho rancho- ck if they hnd n ilro inside, stating thnt ho would like to warm his hands, which wero very cold, and was invited to como in. Whllo warming himself, ho Inspected tho colored man, who sat close by with his head down and arms folded, and jerking out a pistol placed it under his prisoner's nose, making him throw up his hands, which ho held close and tight against his breast. On searching if ho hnd nny weapons a pistol was found in tho breast pocket of his coat, against which his arms wero closely pressed, m: was iNViBiniii:. Tho circumstance or the crimo with which Glbbs Is charged nro so thoroughly fresh in tho minds of the public that a repetition would bo n mero waste of words. Sulllco it to say that It Is one of tho most singu lar cusch on record in tho annals of crimes committed in thlsstate. The murder was committed early in tho evening, untl for over three weeks tho murderer was completely lost to view as if ho hud been swallowed up in tho Willamette. Even nfter ho was ruptured, Ills identity was not established until more than n week Inter. Never has there been mado such h determined, persistent, conscien tious scurch for u murderer in this state. Many clues were tracked down, untl olllcors wero sent north, cast, south and west, but all to no avail. Tho murderer eluded detec tion until ufter ho crossed tho Ore gon lino Into California.
