Crarj- Over Spiritualism
Jewo 1'arrar, otic of tho wildest
maniacs ever brought to the Oregon

up from Portland last night. "God
has given me strength, 1. will van

words, which lie cries out in a loud
voice, lie attempts to malco his ut

result of 8iIritunl excitoment, he
having attended many meetings of
the spiritual society at Portland
Tho idea took complete possession of

A .fw Hardware Store.
E. H. Bellinger has just returned
from Portland, where ho purchaf-ed
an extensive and complete stock of
hardware which he will open up in
the armory building. This will
make a line store room, having been
arranged for the accommodation of
a large stock of goods.
Places of liecreallon.
Tho pleasure keekers this evening
will have no trouble in llnding a
place to go. There is some sort of a
thing at the opera house, a concert
given by the Y. W. F. M. society at
tho M. E. church, an entertainment
at tho Christian church, and meet

Hlrh Dlscorery of Gold.
Charles Foster and Geo. Malcy
have discovered a fine gold ledge
near Upper Soda on tho Santiam.
This is what many have been look
ing for, as it has been known for a
number of years that there Is a de
posit of gold in that locality much
finer than California has over pro
duced. There has been a constant
wasli and deposit in tho land along
the south f'irk of tho Santiam. Tills
fact is well known, and there has
been a great di al of prospecting
along tho banks of iho South San
tiam, says tho Lebanon Express, as
the prospectors know that some
where at hand the grant! old Cas
cade mountains had concealed in
lier storehouse gold, rich and
abundant, to make the poor man
rich, and the rlclhinaii richer.
Three New Honsci.
Thero aro all ready in tho course
of construction, contracted or pro
jected, in my new lesidencos in Sa

boom has not yet fairly started, but
when it is the greatest season of
prosperity over looked for will be
here. North Salem is not going to
bring up tho rear of tho line, with
any other portion of the city in tho
lead. She will hold her own. In
proof of this fact it may lie stated
that orders wore given this morning
for lumber for three new cottages in
North Salem. They will be hurried
to a completion. They aro for Mr.
Latta, latoof Kansas, SamuelMuir,
Sr., and J. A. Beam. Salem is go
ing to make great strides thisycai.

This luornhnr a laruo number of
tho students assembled at tho Uni
versity and at tho appointed hour
repaired to tho campus, where, as
sisted by tho ladies, and with impos
ing ceremonies, tho class trees of tho
graduating class of 18SI) were plant
ed. It was a pleasant occasion and
was an event which will ho remem
bered long after many of tho partici
pators shall have been gathered to
their long homo. In tho years to
come these trees to-day planted
amidst the laughter and gaiety of
tho students will stand as mute
sentinels of u day long ago. Jtlsa
happy custom, that of marking tho
day of graduation by the planting of
a monarch of tho forest.
