In a recent number of La Nature Colonel Hcnncbert of tho Belgian Army describes underground forts, which havo enmo into use In Bel gium, an ono of tho principal meth ods of national defense. One of these forts is like an enlarged mole hill, and is built of concrete. Meas uring llfty metres in length, from thirty to forty metres in width, It Is about twelve meters below the surface of the ground, and tho great est height above tho earth Is no more than throe or four metres It pre sents tho appearance of an elliptical cap placed on tho ground, and Is scarcely visible to tho eye. At the center of this artificial rock are three armored towers, each with two heavy guns. There are also four small forts, which are pulled lu and run out at pleasure, each armed with two rapid llrlng guns. At three sultablo places there are ar mored points of observation, from two of which at night the electric light can bo (lashed to watch tho operations of tho enemy. JJelow this surfaco tho earth Is hollowed out In (ho form of a hugo well with armored sides, which Is divided up Into sections, each part protected with armor, one part for provisions and ammunition, another for ma chinery, which Includes tho dyna mos and accumulators for the light ing of tho whole fort, hydraulic ma chines for working the movable turret and sending them ammuni tion, ptinipi for supplying these en gines with water, and a serlua of ventilators to keep tho air pure. Communication with the outer world Is nuide by a subterranean gallery, tho length of which varies according to surrounding circum stances. Tho celling of this gallery Is from eight to ton meters below tho surfaco. To gala access to the fort a hydraulic piston Is worked this raises a ladder which runs along tho whole length of tho fort, and lowers tho door of tho outlet, which Is protected by armor twenty coutimotcrs lu thickness, and Is un der the tiro of two of tho movable forts. All movements, such as change of guard, arrivals of supplies, oto., nro reported by telephone or telegraph. Tho guard does not work tho hydraulic piston except at command, and when tho sentries In ono of tho movable forts havo re- ooimoltored tho visitors. Finally the' gallery communicating with tho outer world is strongly fortltlcd by an armored door defended by two mitrailleuses. Ono of the greatest objections by generals to forts, that thoy absorb luinilvcrw of men who aro wanted lu tho Held, cannot be urged agaliut these subterranean forts, for the garrison consists of thirty or forty mechanics and lcclullHts only, whoso absence would not appreciably weaken tho regiment from which thoy aro drawn. Tho cost of ono of these forts Is, wo aro told, about 100,000. Till: IOWA VOTK.
