Thh civil service rules, what do they amount to? They aro heeded no more than If they were not. Every day we hear of republican postal clerks being ousted to make room for n democrat. "To the victor belong tlio spoils" is literally carried tint by tho democratlo weight and measure. ItiNATips Donnhi.i.y has with drawn from tlio field as tho farm mid labor candidate for governor of Mliiiitota mid has taken the stump for Harrison anil Morton and for W, It. Suoak Is almost as much of a household necessity na bread, and should therefore bo made as cheap ns possible. The Mills bill provides for a reduction of 18 per cent, of the duty on tlint article, and the senate substitute provides for a reduction of 50 ner cent No Intelligent voter can full to see at a glance, therefore, which of the two parties is most desirous to Iesen the burdens of the nconle and lower the prices of food. The ellbct of the Mills bill in this respect; would be to legislate i0,000,000 per year into the treasury of the Sugar Trust, while the re publicans aim to give that amount to the people In the form of saving on their purchases of sugar. TiiHirdeal of hand-shaking and speech-making through which the republican nominee is going was never before paralleled in the history of the world. Since the day of his nomination Mr. Harrison liusskaken hands with more than 250,000 peo ple, tens of thousands ot whom were total straugers and who journeyed many miles at their own expense in order to meet this man of the peo ple at his own homo and among his neighbors. During all this time Mr. Cleveland has received two visiting delegations, one of drum mers in tlio employ of the whisky trust and smother from Buffalo Bill's wild west show. At Potsdam, N. Y., a few days ago, a republican pole was about to be raised, when, just as all was ready, a prominent citizen and dem ocrat stepped forward and said : "Gentlemen ! I desire that no re publican should assist in the raising of tliis pole. Theroaro nine teen democrats who crave tho honor of doing tlio job." And so it was done. Tho republicans stood back and the nineteen democrats raised it, as a declaration of their purpose to vote for Harrison and Morton and protection. And so It is all over tlio Empire suite democrats rallying for Harrison and Morton. Evhhy republican and everybody else interested in tlio continuation of a protective system, ought to work day and night, early and late, to promote tlio interests of the la boring classes. There is to be no let up n ti t it the hist ballot Is polled Tuc-duy, November 0th. Tho re maining days of the campaign are tho more interesting, as all manner of lies will be in circulation, calcu lated to mislead the less Informed. Now is tlio time to work. Work for the entire ticket and lie on the alert for Hank Imovements of every de scription. In Indiana tho greenback candi date for governor is Dr. Hiram E. Leonard. He ran In 1884 and got 8,!i:JS votes. Cleveland carried In diana by 0,427 plurality. Putting tho republican and greenback voto together Cleveland was short 1,011 of carrying tho state. Kinco tho national greenback convention ad loun.ed without nominating a na tional ticket Dr. Leonard lias conio out for Harrison and Morton. It is thought a largo part of the green back vote in Indiana will do the same tiling. MMMMHMVUi Tin: New York Herald prints a most remarkable letter from ono of its traveling correspondents. It says Cleveland Is as good as defeat ed unless ho can overcome tho 70, 000 mujorlty with which Harrison will carry the state outside of Klugs county and Now York. Tho Herald Is a pronounced Cleveland paper and would publish no such admis sion unless it was well substantiated. Tmk Jouhnat. continues to bo the only republican and the leading paper of Salem.
