man, who has Just returned from
another visit to Ramsey county,
Dakota, tho home of a colony of
Polish Jews, who aro suffering from
destitution, says tho settlement is
seventeen miles from Devil's lake,
nnd comprises seventy families,
numbering 238 souls. They came
hero two years ago last spring, pro
cured land, built houses, untl went
to work to clear tho land and become
independent farmers. About tho
middle of August n severe frost
came nnd ruined tho entire wheat
crop, leaving them only about as
many potatoes as they used for
planting and barely enough oats to
winter their stock. Troublo and
suflerlng began nt onco. Their
needs are fuel and bread, aud thesu
articles must bo had at once, for
every day Increases tho suflerlng
nnd privation. Wo visited about
twenty houses and found nil, with
but two exceptions, without a stick,
of wood or any other mnterlal for
flro except cnttlo droppings. On
Saturday lee was three-quarters of
an Inch thick, aud we found numer
ous little children with bate feet and
legs. Ono woman, with two llttlo
girls with bare feet and limbs, was
trying to keep warm on tho sunny
sldo of tho house. Somo creditor
had taken her cow, and left her to
starve with her little ones.
