On .Saturday a gang of ruffians attacked a Union Pacific train as it lay at a water tank not far from Hawllns, Wyoming. The engineer and fireman wero attend ing to their duties when three men rushed up, and covering them with revolvers, ordered them to throw up their arms. The robbers had the drop on them and they could only comply. Hut the front brakenmn showed fight. He smashed one robber in the face with a lump of coal, and grappling him the two had a desperate struggle. This dis concerted flbe outlaws and they turned and ran, but the brnkemau was shot in tiie arm and hip. Tills brave defense of the company's properly should be generously rewarded, because such a show of resistance as this on every occasion would discourage the business of train robbery. Large possces started in pursuit, of the fleeting robbers. It appears that Pamell's aggres sive action In instituting a libel suit In Scotland at the present time, is accounted for by the fact that he is In possession of evidence which sat isfies him as to tlie identity of the forger of the famous letters attri buted to Ills pen by the London Times. The Tory commission guaranties indemnity to all wit nesses who testify before it. Hut this scheme of legalized safety to possible perjurers will not avail in tlie Scottish courts. Thomas Power O'Connor and John Hed uioud have also brought suits for damages against tho Times, growing out or tlie Mime series of publications as that lu which the Parnell ease had its origin. All iu'all, tlie session of 18.SH h Hkcly to be a very uncom fortable one for her Majesty's ministry, and its co-ordinate author ity, the London Times. A I'ltiXK report, a few days ago, limited Mrs. I.angtry's presence on the inlmlc stage to a few weeks, and then llnlshcd the genteel comedy of her life by marrying her to Kreddlo Ochhardt. She says her theatrical en gagements run on to the end of April, ami she bus never mentioned (o a Mini any Intention to marry, as she Is not yet divorced, and to dl- cus another marital otillgatlou would be growi Indelicacy. Knowing the readers of the Union Hignal will be glad to learn that the gospel of temperance has reached the uttermost parts of our land, I bend this line. AVo held the lirst temper ance meetings in this territory two weeks ago at Sitka, and as a result of our efforts organized two local unions, one among tlie natives and one among the whilcsjsueh depart ments as would meet tho needs of the place wero taken up and super intendents appointed. Tho ladies are making u great effort to start a free reading-room for the benefit of the sailors and soldiers and public in general. Two Loyal Temperanco Legions were organized, one among the Hussian children and one among the natives, with a largo membership. Tlie law enaetetl by congress relative to teaching sclentlllc tem perance in llieschools, Is thoroughly enforced both in tho government and mibslou schools. I wits strongly supported in tlie work by the moral loving portion of tho community, and it was with u feeling of sincere regret that I stepped aboard the steamer for tho next port. So the cause marches on and noble women all over the laud aro putting their "hand to the plow and their shoulder to tho wheel," and as we see the results our faith grow stronger, and wo already sco the golden fringe or tlio mantle of tem perance that will soon cover tho laud. "Kor have T not commanded thee bo strong and countgeous, bo not afraid." Miss J. A. Ackhii.man. Hiss Margaret J.
