Havana harbor is guarded by Morro
Castle. The garrison numbers about
200. Three years ago last J tine tho
temperature rose beyond all pre
vious records and tho sutlerlngwas
intense. The authorities were dread
ing tho possible Invasion of Cuba's
deadliest scourge yellow fever.
News came to the city'of tho break
ing out of tho fever at the castle.
Immediately steps were taken for
tho complete isolation of tho fort.
No boats were allowed to land from
tho infected locality and none were
brave enough to venture tlie casting
oflhclrlot with the garrison. At
sunset each day wo watched tho
gates open and greatfuneral corteges
wind tlielr way down the hill to tlie
little garrison cemetery; we listened
for tlie volleys of salute, their num
ber denoting how many bravo fel
lows had succumbed that day. Quo
evening as we apathetically gazed
across the water a boat shot forth
from tho pier of Havana. It was
loaded to tho gunwales with provis
ions aud medicines, and none in
that crowd needed to bo told its des
tination. Our eyes then sought the
