The "SK Down" Church for Clear Sky and smooth Se-The "Stand Up" Church for Rough vTeather-OMcrlptlon n! Iloth Methods of Worship. VTe had two separata and dUtinct kinds of d,vnl worship oVboard, especially adapted ZZ exigence of the weatlier Onowas Sww among in as "Sit Down" church; the ZsLd Up" church. IVhen the whid wasfair and the mb smooth, vhen the sky clear and the sun bright, w hen the sur fce of the ocean was reflecting f rom niyri 7of dimpling wavelet the brilliant hue and glancing beams of tho firmament above, then Sunday at sea showed no very striking contrast to the day of rest ashore The serv ices of the church were prefaced by the serv ice of the state known to us as "divisions, when a careful and searching inspection of shin and crew was carried on in grave and decorous silence by captain, commander and senior lieutenant. "Divisions" over, the crew would disperse for a short time while the order to "rig church" was carried out. In a largo frigate this was always done upon the main deck, the principal gun carrying deck, that is, of the ship, thoroughly protected from wind and rain by the upper deck above it. Here accommodation was provided for the men, somo 500 in number, by placing capstan bars and planks' across inverted "washdeck tubs, affording thus a kind of rough and ready form on which to sit. These were placed "athwortships," across the breadth of the deck, while chairs were arranged further aft for tho senior and Junior officers, who gener ally sat on opposite sides of the deck. The chaplain, who on board ship is known by a thousand more or less irreverent names pndro. sky pilot, etc. is supplied with a Portable apparatus ns nearly akin to the reading desk of tho shore as the wit of a ship's cnrjienter can devise. This is also "rigged" in n commanding position between tbeouieersiuijuicn. All Is'liic retorted ready to the comman der, the order is given to "toll the boll," and forthwith the fcntrj begins to thump slowly and monotoiiou' ly upon the shfp"s bell, the dupi or of vth.ch is held in the hand and used as tt haum.ei , instead of the bell itself being siMing. Tho men are marched off to their plait, tho officer tnko their seats, tho cap tain ooni"S out of Ins cabin, the chaplain en ters his desk, and the familiar and solemn words of the sen ico full upon tho ear, accom panied m this case by tho muffled groaning of tho ship ohsIibbh ays beforo tho pressure of the brieve. The responses are, as a rule, not loudly or distinctly made, but merely ir.uttvrcd; whereas, were all that " coi:t,i oration of men fully im bued Willi tho spirit of prayer, a groat and emphatic btream of supplication should ascend from that compact parish to tho tin ono of linn who rules tho rngiugof tho sea. But when tho time arrives for l'ralse, then, provided that the tuno is n ell known and popular, the bluo jackets break Into a burst of song, ofteii most harmonious, always admirable from the power and rich ness of tho volume of sound, and in which many may bo noted taking, with well trained accttmcy, the tenor and even tho alto parts. This is 8oi!!tim. led by a small harmonium; sometimes, should tho ship bo largo enough to ixm4mouc, by tho ship's band. Thou fol lows, as on shore, the sermon ; but when at last tho blessing hns been given, and ere the morn seriously inclined havo risen from their Liimm, tho loud imperative order comes from the liM of tho commander, "Boatswain's mate, ))1hj flown!'' the shrill trill of that petty oillcer's i histle is instantly raised, iu obedience to tho mandate, and officers and inon leave tho mam deck, which is speedily cleared of its Sunday paraphernalia. This, however, was fine weather worship, when we all could meet in prayer without hindrance. Bat thero enmo Sundays when tlie conditions were far otherwise when tho v iinl was shrieking and whistling with fiend ish uproar throitjh spurs niul rigging; when the waves were roaring and hissing, striking with the force and thud of n steam hammer against theliows of the laboring ship, which herself added to the din by tho indescribablo moans and groans mid cracks by which she ga e expression to her indignation nt such uutilr treatment. She would writhe and wallow, would plunge and roll, would trem Itlri and stop, and thenmako n still more furi ous rush forwanl, until all thought of divine worship in the usual form was out of the (uestlon. Thew were the days of "Stand Up" church, mid now the elaliorato arrangements of tho line weather function were conspicuously absent. The main deck ports wers closed to deep out the hissing and angry seas, nud the only light mine from the hatchways abovo, many of them closed by gratings. All stood, officers, and men alike; and those who IhuI exiwrianre of such things kept their eyes oh a handy ringbolt or friendly breeching of a gun auythiug, iu fact, to which they might cling should tho motion of the ship be come too violent even for well trained sea !f. Thmi the chaplain, no longer trusting himself within the comuaw of his reading ihk, but clinging with all the strength of one arm to an iron stanchion supporting the deck above, lifted up his feeblo voice in op IosiUtMi to those of the strident elements, which seemed to unite in the effort to smother Ids solemn tones with their demoniac uproar, Utt they should wing their way upward and nttMlu their goal Xo sermon now, no hymns, ik litany, Jut the simiile morning prayers, awl Ih men are dismissal to find what eowfort thy can on the close, musty, dark, wetdeeks.
