The Hoy Kob the Jlenroo.t or One ol th racHlty-AMceVounir 3Ian Cnnghl In n Trap Before the Faculty The Ke flnement of Torture. In the early years of this century, whei log bouse were Kood enough for the arerag nSmrian. a certain doctor presided ovei Franklin college. ,,,,. t olru. The simple habits of their dignified 8ir did not prevent tlw boys of those days from having their fun-indeed, they carried on ar amount of devilment which the college boyi of theae times would consider reepectable. Thebo)-s thought that anything was fait which would make oneof the faculty the vic tim of a Joke, and on one occasion they law a dark plot to rob the doctor's poultry yard and afterward celebrate the event by n mid night banquet. The doctor's chickens were the pndo of nil domestic establishment, and he had built fot their accommodation a log house. The log! were "notched down" at the corners and held in place by their own weight nnd the roof. At a lata hour the boys repaired to the hen house, armed uith ft fenco rail. It was ar easy matter to insert the rail between twe logs nnd prize up those above, so as to makl an opening through which a man could crawL A dapper young fellow, who had visited thl doctor's daughters, went in and began to pul the chickens off tho roost nnd wring thell necks. While ho did so tho boys outside kepi their weight on tho rail, and so kept thl crack open for his escape. The nico young amn, whom we will call Bob, had dropped about a dozen chickens outside, and thl whole crowd was in high gleo over tho pros pective banquet. DANGER AT 1TAND. Just then a big, old rooster crowed. "Lookout, Bob; break that rooster's necl and stop his noise." "Sh! What's thatr Tlmi-n w n low PTOttl. "Hoi's, you liavo let theso logs down toe low; lift them a II ttlo so I can get out. Be quick about it" At that instant there was a loud bark nnd a big dog bounded into the poultry yard. The boys on the outride for an instant stood their ground. They dropped the rail nnd they grabbed chance weapons to beat off the dog, but before thoy could disable him the door of the doctor's residrnce opened and his tall figure appeared. The boys scattered, nil but one. The logs had come together ngain mid Bob was a prisoner, lie crouched in a cor ner and held his breath, hoping that he would be overlooked, but the dog told where he was. By this time tho doctor had come up and other members of the family came out, eager to see who was caught in the man trap. "Why, it's Bob." "Who would have thought it?'' Tho ex clamations were heard In tho house aud echoed by the young ladies. Then the door of the log house was oiened and tho young man was sent to the dormitory. He was called before tho faculty tho next morning. The ioor fellow would have sold himself for a wing, and expected to lie peremptorily ex polled nnd iierhnps proiecuted. THIS DOCTOR'S COKCLUSIO.NS. Meantime the doctor had thought the mat ter over. He was a man of great sagacity in tho management of bjs, and he recognized this freak as a piece of wild mischief which might not be meanness. Ho resolved to give tho matter such disposition as would put n sober head on the young man. Accordingly, when Hob appeared, looking liko a criminal, the doctor lectured him severely, but in a fatherly way, and told him that such an offense must not go w ithout a severe punish ment. Bob expected the sentence of his expulsion. With measured tones, like n judge pronounc ing the death sentence, the doctor said: "Mr. , I will expect you to fake supjiei with me to-night, and, aa you show a fond neat for chicken, the fowls you took off the root last night w ill be on tho table." Bolt would rather have lieen expelled. But for tho ilUtress it w ould cause his iwreuts he would hae gone homo. In spite of his lark! thoro was good stun In Bob, and with a tii mcirious effort he resolved U fao the imi.ie. It Is iit.iHWstibl.i to describe the mental ag ony Hob went through that evening when he tut at the table where the doctor presided with courtly dignity. Uia elegant wife could not liavo been more courteous to an honored gueot than she was to rkib, and her daughters treated the young man as cordially as ever. Not a word was said alamt the affair of the night liefore, but the 1.. v dish of chicken was like a mount ain iu i uo ixxir boy eyea. It w as the refine ment of torture when tlw doctor, with the utntoat suavity, WIhh1 him to the choicest pteoeo. The situation, which, under ordinary cir cumstances, would liave been ludicrous, uuder the doctor's cotuosure and his wife'i tact was carried almost to the pathetic. It was a Us-oii w ritten on Hob's memory ic burning letters, and he never forgot lu At lanta Journal. NEW AD"EKTI5E3ffi3TS. -campaigjTaddresses.
