further-
ing the interests of our city, permit
me through the columns of the
JouiinaIj to make a few suggestions.
Suppose we have a grand old cele
bration on the 4th and among other
attractions a sham battle by tho O.
N. G. The cost would be nothing
compared to the number of people
it would attract; by commencing
prepurulions early we could have
all Marion and Polk counties. A
sham battle would be a novelty and
jieoplo would come from all the
small towns to see It. We could have
companies A, B, C, K, F audi,
of the 2ndIlcgimcnt,uudthocavulry
from Sheridan. These seven coni
punies could bring 2100 men armed
and uniformed. Then the Grand
Army and other military orgttnl
zutions would swell the number to
nearly 400 men, who could iniike
the eagle scream as site never
"screm" before In Salem. Let us
begin early and have a grand old
Fourth aud the business men of
Salem will nover regret It. II.
A Srrloiu fall.
Mrs. Patterson, who lives about
two aud a half miles thin side of Sil

this morning in the followiugl'mun

fulling site caught hold of t lie churn
which fell on top of her. Her
collar bone was fractured, her right
shoulder dislocated, her nose broken
and she received several other severe
bruises. Dr. .1. N. Smith, of this
city, drove out and gave her the
needed surgical trcutmeiit and loft
her feeling as comfortable us anyone
could bo under the elrcumstuiicoH.

How
St. John is Plnying into
Hands of the Democracy.
tho
San Fhancisco, April C This
evening's Bulletin, In commenting
on tho apparent fact that the demo
cratic party will make one of the
strongest lights this year that has
ever been mude to curry Oregon, has
a long editorial on outside causes or
motives that may aid them in the
results desired. As in the east, so
democratic politicians here hold that
there is one combluution by which
a deinocraticprcsidcntcanbe elected
without the vote of Indiana. That
combination unites New York, Now
Jersey aud Oregon with the solid
south. If a democrat could bo
elected in the June election In the
last named state, a sort of leverage
would be secured to carry tho state
in November, and work out the po
litical problem the solid south plus
New York, New Jersey nnd Oiegon.
Looking at this fact, the Bulletin
says:
St. John, the apostle of temper
ance, Is now en route to Oregon, and
Is to engage In tho contest. It is u
little remarkable, perhaps, that tho
campaign against whisky should bo
made to assume great activity in
Oregon just at the time when tho
democracy wants much to secure a.
Pueiilc state. St. John will seek to
impress on the farmers and business
men that it is alcohol in its various
forms tltui 1ms to be fought, nirtl not
free trade. Tho iisuul rule is (hut
while persons influenced by him
uro engaged in a conflict with the
monster, the democrats get away
with the state. If the question of
Intemperance could be kept in ulwy
nnce until the questions of the tariff
were settled, there would be a fairer
Held for the fray. But It Is Just
about the lime of a presidential elec
tion Unit, the Kansas propugaudlst
exhibits tlio greatest uetlvlty. Ho
has been puradlug this coast for
some time past, in a mud sort oi
way; but It Is only as the presiden
tial election approaches that ho
grows vehement on tho proposition
that the line of menu of the Pacific-
coast culture shall be vigorously
drawn at tiunollonrris water
and vinegar bitters. A system
of republican diversion, by
just such devices us that of St.
John, Is the secret of democratlo suc
cess. It is tho method by which
the minority party, which not long
ago, waged physical war against the
Union, and Is now waging an
economic war on the states which
nre opposed to it, lias managed to
win the ascendency.
