EVENING CiAPITAL JOURNAL THURSDAY, MARCH 22, 18SS. flreat Destruction of Timber. The Orcgonian says Mr. J. M. Bernhardt, special timber agent, who has for sonic time been inspect ing timber land in Tillamook coun ty, arrived in Portland Tuesday. He came across the mountains on horseback, and reports the road free from snow except about flfty feet in one place, but there are a number-of trees across the track, which is still very muddy, and no attempt will be made to cross with wagons for six weeks yet. Mr. Bernhardt was much surprised to see the great ravages which have been committed by fire in timber of the Coast range. He explored seven townships of timber on the Trask and Wilson rivers, and from the top of the range looked away across miles and miles of charred stumps reaching clear to theNestucca. Ho was told by an old settler that on account of a quarrel between two men twenty five years ago, about some rails which one had cut and which the other claimed were split too small, the rails were set on Arc and they set the forest on fire, and the out come was that four townships or 144 square miles of timber was destroy ed. - CHEMKKETK HOTEL ABRIVALS. It is a matter much to be regret ed that the government works at the Yaqulna bay havo been forced to shut down. The appropriation has been exhausted and all govern ment improvements for the present have been suspended. The laborers have been discharged and the gov ernment tug boat General Wright has sailed for Portland. The Now port News very appropriately says : "We are sorry to seo the work stop now, as the season advances when the work could be done to such good advantage. Wo hope however to secure another appropriation at an early day. The loss incurred by 'allowing the work already done to be injured by lack of money to fin ish the work ; the expense of hous ing the machinery alone, is a great one that should not havo to be done until the jetty is finished." Hearing Postponed. The hearing in .the case of John Munch vs. V. Kratz, et. al., the Dixie mill case, which has been going on in this city for several days, has been postponed until ex pert book-keepers A. Grant, of this city, representing plaintiff John Munch, and Al. Kratz, of Dixie, representing the defendants Kratz & Washburne, make an examination of the co-partnership books and are ready to give evidence thereon, so that a proper accounting may. be made. Fertility of Soil, Salubrity or Climate, Whole- some Water, Excellent Timber and Delightful Scenery-Uealtk, Wealth, Prosperity. Marion county is situated in tho heart of the magnificent Willamette valley, the central gem in the clus tor of rich counties that form that princely domain, and is the banner commonwealth of the great north west In all the essentials that go to wards making it a profitable abiding place, and u home for the thrifty farmer, the cunning artisan and the industrious mechanic. Rich in its agricultural resources, in its cultivated and uncultivated lauds, In ita water powers, and minerals; rich lit Its colleges and schools of learning, and with a climate unsurpassed for its salubrity, it presents to the immigrant from the overorowded states, where cold winters and hot summers, with terrible cyclones, prevail, who comes to the coast with some means, advantages that no othor county In Oregon possesses. Much has been written of this western country that requires a stretch of the Imagination to com prehend, and numerous complaints are heard from the class who have been misled by them, so in this brief sketch the Writer desires to avoid exagcration as to Its present and prospective advantages, asking those In the east into whose hands this may fall-particularly those who have their eyes directed towards this coast to peruse it carefully, feeling that it is not written to lure immigrants within its borders, but only as a truthful discrlptlon of a land which, if it does not "flow milk and honey," contains within its bosom wealth and resources equal to any other country on the Pacific side of the Rocky mountains. HOUNDARIKS. Marion county is bounded on the north by the Willamette river and Butte creek which separates it from Clackamas county; on the east by Clackamas county and the Cascade mountains, which separate it from Wasco county; on the south by the Santiam river and the north fork of the Santiam, separating it from Linn county .and on the west by the Willamette river. PHYSICAL FORMATION. The county contains, including valley, prairie and mountain lands, about 000,000 acres. There arc two main divisions, the mountain and the valley. Tho latter extends from the Willamette river to the foot of the Cascade mountains, a distance of about fif teen miles. Tho mountainous portion contains some fourteen townships of mostly unsurveyed land; lying in a strip twelve miles north and south by forty miles east and west, and com prises all classes of land, from rich narrow valleys in the passes, up through all the grades of rolling, hilly and broken, to that of rock bound canyons and inaccessible craggy peaks. It is generally heavily timbered, and In the near future will be valuable for its lumber sup plies. These hills and riiountalns afford a wonderful summer range for stock, and many of the more en terprising farmers are availing them selves of this opportunity, and when the cold frosts of autumn approach, the stock are brought out to fresh pastures, thus enabling them to sur vive the winter storms with little care. GREAT ADVANTAGES. A decided advantage Marion coun ty has over many others is the di versified farming interest that can be carried on throught the entire year; notwitlistbnding this is a wet climate during the winter months, the uplands are seldom too wet to work, and long before the prairie farmers aro through with their seed ing, the hill farmer is preparing for his summer work. And yet tho low lands are much preferred by many; the yield per acre is generally greater, ana perhaps leas labor is re quired to place tho soil in proper condition for crops; and then should the season prove dry, the bottom lands are sure to bring the best crops. No better farming land can be round In the United States than that on the noted Howell prairie. French prairie, Santiam prairie una Salem prairie. The soil of these tire wonderfully productive. With good cultivation, forty bushels of wheat and sixty of oats per acre can be readily secured. FACILITIES FOR MARKET. The Willamette river, with two lines of railroad running the entire length of the county from north to south, witli the Oregon Pacific road crossing the southeast corner of the county, affords ample facilities to reacli a market in any direction. SALEM Is the capital of tho state and county seat of Marion county, situ ated on the Willamette river and on the O. & V. railroad. Costly buildings have been erected, among which tho state capitol building, county court house, Chemeketo hotel, opera house, new public school building, Catholic school building, Methodist church, Willamette Uni versity, and many private residences and business blocks, which will compare favorably with older and larger cities. GENERAL. All things considered, the Willam ette valley has the best country in the world, and Marlon county Is about centerally located therein. To those seeking homes in tho west, no better opportunities can be offered, than arefound here. Persons desiring information regarding Marion county or the Willamette valley, those wanting farming lands, stock farms, business property or city residences, will be promptly and reliably informed by addressing tho well known firm of Willis & Chambcrlin, real estate agents, opera house block, Salem, Oregon. THE JLVItKKTS. The foreign wheat market Is Arm but tho local market is inactive. There l scarcity of butter nnd it U In good demand at fancy figures. TOHTLANIl MAHJCBTH.
