The
Klamath
Project
Tho Klamath Project is the name
Hint has been applied to the reclama
tion of about 100,000 acre of land now
. "iKltT tho overflow of the Klamath
Hivi'i' nml or Lower Kloiimth Luliu and Tula Lake
nml llm imitation or about 1 1-0,000 ncrei of valley
land uiijarcnt to the Klamath River, oIoiik tho course
of I.ohI River and tho tributary portion of the great
plaleaii lyiiiK chiefly in Klumath County, Oregon, but
iiImo embracing u part of Siskiyou and Modoo Couu
lii's, California, a total area of 200,000 ncrt'H.
Tliu Project embraces tho construction of a very
Kreat mileage of canals, laterals and drainage canals
mid will have its principal source iu Upper Klamath
Lake. Clear Lake and Horselly aro reservoir sites
vvlii-ru Hood water will he impounded and utilized for
irrigation of land included in the upper portion of
tho Project.
Work on the main canal was atarted in the Spring
of I'JOo' and the first unit of nine miles is now com.
pletcd. About 13,000 acres of land will be irrigated
from the first unit, the laterals for which are being
coiiNtructcd under the supervision of the engineers
haviiiK charge of the Project. Hy far the largest
pioportiou of the land under the first unit is now b
HiiKcbrtish and must be cleared and broken in time
for uiois in the Spring of 1008- Work on the sec
ond unit U being done by the Government and em
bracer nineteen miles of mniu canal and twenty-sis
inilcM of laterals to furnish water to about 20,000
additional acres of laud. Work on this unit will be
prosecuted as rapidly nn possible.
Nearly oncliiilf nr the area to be irrigated is now
under water to a depth of from onp to fifteen feet
mid will he reclaimed hy it system of drainage lo
lower the level of the rivers and lakes. A large part
of the swamp laud and practically all of the valley
laud in tho Klnuutth Hniiu are held in private own
ership and some iu very large tracts which must be
aold in tracts of 1G0 acres or less under the regula
tions governing the perfection of a water-right.
KLAMATH'S For its development tad pro
OKEATEBT perity the Klamath Basin must have
NEED people, and the right kind of people
at that. IU great need is intelli
gent, practical fanners, who understand the meaning
of intensified and diversified farming'; men who will
buy land, not for speculative purposes, but with the
idea of clearing off the sagebrush and making per
manent and cemfortftble homes. Such men are bound
to succeed. There is room for thousands of them.
Developing Sugar beets have been grown ex-
Various pi-rimentnlly throughout the Klatn-
Industries nth Valley. The percentage of sugar
in high, as will be noted from the
following analysis mndc by the United States De
partment of Agriculture from beets grown near
Migar in beets, per cent, 21.7; sugar in juice, per
rent., IN 1 j cnefllcient of purity, 83.1.
Kerii-nei' has demonstrated that excellent as
p.iragiiK, unions and celery can be grown, the tule
i.iiiiU being very similar to those of the Sacramento
mid Sun .loii(iiin Valleys of California, where such
vegetable nre so MicccKifully cultivated. Through
nut the world the reclaimed marshlnnds are the best
suited for the highest development of dairy inter
ests. 'I'll ere is no question that this will become a sugar
beet producing section and that a number of facto
ries will be built and operated with the development
of the industry.
All l.iuds of fruit adapted to the temperate zona
thrive here-npples, peaches, pears, cherries, prunes,
pliiuit, apricots nnd nectarines do well, and small
fruits bear abundantly nml of excellent quality.
There nre n great many small orchards throughout
the basin that prove the adaptability of the region
to the profitable production of fruit.
K, L. Smith, former president of the Oregon State
Hoard of Horticulture, gives it ns his opinion that
the foothill lands arc specially adapted to npplo
growing.
Cultivation of the potato has passed boyond the
experimental stage, the sandy loom of tho uplands
producing them in great nbundance.
Klamath County wheat, grown without irrigatitfn,
took the premium nt the New Orleans Exposition.
The most important forage crop is alfalfa, the soil
being peculiarly adapted to its growth.
Excess All landowners being required
Holdings Must to sell their excess holdings, there
Be Sold is n large area of good land for sale
at reasonable figures, prices rang
ing from about $15 to $35 for unimproved, and $20
to $50 per aere tor improved land. Land adjacent
to the principal towns commands hia-fcer prices. The
purchaser pays for the water right at a cost of about
$18 per acre to be paid for In ten equal annual in
stallments without interest. This amounts to less
than the ordinary annual rental paid private ditch
companies. Some of the irrigators of Klamath Val
ley (and they nre tho most prosperous farmers) have
already paid out to auch companies for water $60 per
aero and rwn no water. All of these companies havo
been purchased by tho Government and included in
the eystem.
No public lands will be open for settlement for
several years.
Climate The upland soil is mainly a rich sandy
and loam of great uuiformity and composed
Soil largely of disintegrated and eroded lava
with nn admixture of volcanic nsh nnd
dlatomaceous earth, tho latter material of plant ori
gin, formed in the bottom of the ancient sea which
covered tho greater part of tho Great Iasin, nnd of
which Klamath Valley-ia, northwesterly extension.
Sueh soil, characteristic of many of tho richest agri
cultural sections of the world, including much of
Italy and tho great plains of India, la extremely for
tilo, and of lasting productiveness. The lako and
tule lands are made up of a volcanic soil containing
much organio matter, a vegetable accumulation of
ages, aud is of a peatty nature.
The olimato is extremely healthful aud not severe.
There ia rarely any Winter weather boforo the latter
part of December, and but little coro weather during
the eutire Winter. The annual precipitation is about
fifteen inches, with little rain during the Summer
month.
