fully covered and the edition con
tains numerous well written
articles on the fruit, timber and
mining industries of that section.
The week beginning September
21st will see the greatest live
stock and race meeting at Port
land that has been in that city
since the Lewis & Clark Exposi
tion in 1905. The gathering
there last week, participated in
by the Oregon Pure Dred Live
stock Association and the North
Pacific Fair Association, brought
live stock men from all over the
country, closing with a banquet
at the Portland Commercial Club. I
According to the plans of Swift
& Company, Portland is to be
come the largest packing house
center west of Kansas City.
Actual work on the stockyards
and plant is to begin within a
few months. All arrangements
with the railroad companies rela-,
tive to spurs and sidetracks have
been completed. The construc
tion of these tracks is to begin
at once. Work on the stock
yards is to commence as the rail
roads finish the sidetracks to the
packing house site. The plant
complete including wharfage for
seagoing vessels, will cost some
thing like $4,000,000.
With a double set of delegates
to the Republican national con
vention in the field irom Florida,
, selected by the warring office
holders and anti-administration
famous at the split convention,
each of which will fight for the
seats at Chicago, political atten
tion is becoming centered on the
southern states, In every state
of the. "Solid South" a similar
situation promises to develop.
The significance of this cannot
be overestimated, as upon the
eating,of contesting delegations
may depend the republican nomi
najtlon. With over two hundred
seats from the southland in dis
pute when tin convention meets
and the states with double dele
gations ruled out of voting, it
will be an easy matter for the
field candidates against Secretary
Taft, by combining to seat the
anti-administration candidates.
With the convention thus orga
nised. Taft's chances, it is
claimed by leading politicians,
waali go gUwmering.
