John. Mitchell, president of the
United Mineworkers, when asked
in regard to the rumors to the
effect that there had been inaug
urated during the recent Mine
workes convention a movement to
indorse the candidacy of certain
aspirants for the Presidency of
the United States and other po
litical offices, stated that so far
as he knew there was no founda-1

The Seattle Exposition bill'
went through the Senate by a'
practically unanimous vote. Bur-1
kett, who threatened to do all
manner of things to defeat it,
made a vicious attack and thun
dered loudly for half an hour.
When he concluded, several Sen
ators spoke in behalf of the bill
and when Piles moved its pass
age, barely a voice save that of
Burkettwas heard in opposition.
J. N. Smith made a flying trip
to Albany to secure an affidavit
from James Powell declaring
that Senators Fulton had no con
nection with the paying of $1600
to Representative Smith, dur
ing the legislative holdup in 1897.
Senator Smith did not get the
affidavit, but rumor in political
circles indicates that Powell has
made known his willingness to
make some sort of affidavit on
the subject and satisfactory to
Fulton.
