By recent action of the Superior Court of Klickitat county betwen six and seven thousand acres of choice hay lands in the Camas Prarie district will become available for domestic crops and such grasses as timothy, red clover, alsike, etc. The Camas Prarie district bear much the same relation to the White Salmon Vallev as our Upper Valley bears to Lower Hood River. The land has bten utilized for a number of years for dairy and grazing purposes but owing to overflow conditions for the greater portion of each vear verv little of the tame grasses could be grown, although the land itself is of a very productive nature. A drainage district has been finally created by the state which enables the holders of this land to sell bonds covering a long term of years for the purpose of draining this surface water. Senator Cottrell, one of the most prac tical engineers in the state of Washing ton, has had charge of the proposed drainage work and a complete profile map showing elevation and various classifications of the work has been made. Prof. Thatcher, soil expert of the Pullman Agricultural College, who is well up on matters of this sort, has had charge ft various experiments as to soil conditions, and he has been for several years an ardent advocate of the drainage of these lands. At the last session of the Superior Court of Kliciktat county district a jury was empaneled to pass on the various benefits and damages connected with this drainage. It required three weeks for the various testimony to he submitted, as somethng like seventy tracts of land were passed on separate ly. Rights of way for tne main canal and various laterals for the drainage were condemned and damages awarded as well as henehts. Although this matter has been in the courts for several years the jury verdicts were accepted as final and there is now noth ing in the way of the completion of the project. C. L. Wheeler of our firm and "my self have spent something over three months making investigations and gathering data as to the details of this work. We expect to spend consider able time this spring and summer ex ploiting the limited poition of this land which we will have for sale as well as a considerable acreage of timber lands which lies surrounding Camas Prarie proper. 15. b. Duncan. CENTRAL ORCHARD CO. WILL SUBDIVIDE TRACT C. R. Hone, who formerly occupied a building on the east side of First street opposite the Mt. Hood Hotel, has moved his oflice to the large corner room of tho Johnson building opposite the First National bank. Mr. Hone will handle the business of both the Central Orchards and the Honeboro Orchard Companies, the former company, the directors of which are Mr. Hone, V. H. Sprout and K. (). lllanchar. are subdiv'idintr their tract of W0 acres in the Willow Flat district into small tracts which they will sell on the installment plan. This is the first land in the Hood River district proper that has been handh d in this manner. I he Honeboro tract, containing 1500 acres, is located on the line of tho Mt. Hood R. R. north of Parkdale. In mldition'to Mr. Hone, V. C. Hrock, Myron Hruner and J. W. McDonald are interested in this land, in which a large crew of men is at present engaged in clearing operations. A hundred and titty acres of it have already been set to trees and 10 acres will be put out this spring. RESISTS ARREST A man, giving his name us Fred Shields and staling that he was from The Dalles, who was arrested by Mar shal Lewis and Deputy Ilickox Tues day afternoon near tho passenger station of tho O.-W. R. & N. Co., made an attempt to escape on Oak street at the Hood River Hanking & Trust Co. comer as the two ollicers were conducting him to the city lock up. Crazed by drink the prisoner was cursing the ollicers at the top of his voice. When Third ateet was reached he made an elfort to jerk loose and it became necessary for Marshal Lewis to apply his club. The blow seemed to put renewed life into the drunk man anil he broke from the ollicers and ran down Third street toward Second. However, a shot fired over his head by Marshal Lewis brought him to a halt. County Court Favors Columbia Road. Fifty per cent of the road funds of i wo roan ui.smcisin noou itiver county through which the proposed Columbia river automobile road will pass will be appropriated by the county for use on tins road. Judge Culbertson states that the county commissioners are strongly in favor of the building ot this road and believe that it will be of very great value to the county in the future. When it is completed, he says, many Portland business men will be induced to build their homes hero and Hood River will become a sub urban residence district of that '.'ity. The county ollicials will aid the building of the road in so far as they are able. The improvements made by lliem will be of a permanent nature. The commissioners spent the first part i.f the week at Cascade Locks with the supervisors of that district inspecting the road there. Mt. Hood Road Changes Schedule. The Mt. HoihI R. R. Co. has an nounced several changes in its sched ule. The train will leave Hood River at its usual time, 8 o'clock A. M. However, a greater speed will be maintained on the return trip. The train will arrive here in the afternoon at :!:!() instead of !, and passengers will be enabled to make connections with Portland. On Sundays the return trip from Parkdale will be made two hours later than the weekly schedule. I I nion Purchases Adjoining Lots. The Apple Growers' Union has pur chased from W. II. Moody, of The Dalles, two lots lying immediately to the south of the Union property. The deal was closed by the J. H. Ileil- ironner Co. The lots were purchased in order that they might be available when it becomes necessary to increase the size of the organization's buildings. Owing to the great interest mani fested in the revival at Odell, the ser vices did not close Jlast Sunday as ex pected, but will close next Friday night. Accompanied by more than a hun Ired local fans the Hood River team of the Mid-Columbia league journeyed to Stevenson Sunday on the steamer Ta homa, which was chartered for the oc casion, fand licked the aggregation of that city by a score of 4 to 2. The most sensational play of the game was when Castner whipped the ball in from the outtield to Catcher Large, who nipped a Stevenson player as he was running for home. Large caught a line game throughout the nine innings. Hood Kiver will meet White Salmon on the Columbia Park grounds Sunday. The Passion Week and Faster service held at the Baptist church were of pronounced interest. During the week Mr. Hargreaves was ably assisted by Mr. Tate. On Sunday morning the Sunday school rendered the song ser vice, "Jesus Lives." The vesper ser vice was largely attended. After the afternoon service the girls' chorus con tinued the Faster service by singing their morning songs at the home of a number of people who were unable to attend service in any of the churches. Thus passed a good Faster day. We are doing everything in new work or repairing. Let us figure with you. Wright's Carpenter I Shop. Phone MH, X. Surveyors Notice.
