Hermiston’s John-Hen- ry Line played on the South roster, a key part of his team’s stout defensive front that held the North to a mere 44 rushing yards, forced three turnovers and registered three sacks. Line himself tallied three total tackles with one tackle-for-loss. “Our defense was amaz- ing,” Line said Monday. “I’ve never been a part of some- thing like that. We were un- stoppable.” As good as the week end- ed for the Hermiston High graduate, it started off a little rough. On the first day of prac- tice with pads on Wednes- Dylan Grogan’s athletic career at Stanfield Second- ary School is nothing short of exceptional. Specifically on the baseball diamond, Gro- gan leaves the Tigers as a two-time Eastern Oregon League Player of the Year, 2016 Class 3A state Player of the Year, two-time first team all-state selection, and leader of the 2016 state championship team. He knew something was wrong immediately, and had to be taken to the local emer- gency room where he had x-rays done and was diag- nosed with a broken finger. “My middle finger all the way to my pinkie was all swollen and all messed up,” Line recalled. The injury slowed him a bit for the rest of the week, but not enough to keep him out. When it came time for the game, Line had his fin- gers taped up with some gel padding underneath to help protect the finger. Line’s South squad, who evened the all-time series re- cord to 33-33-4 with the win, got the scoring going first when McMinnville quarter- back Wyatt Smith hooked up with Wilsonville’s Harrison Steiger on a 17-yard touch- down pass for a 7-0 lead in the first quarter. Then in the third quarter the South add- ed to the lead with a 28-yard field goal from Grants Pass’ Jerin Appling for a 10-0 lead. The South’s defense did not give in until late in the fourth quarter, when North running back Jake McGreevy, Hermiston High School’s John-Henry Line has been named the Football Player of the Year by the East Oregonian/Hermiston Herald following his senior season. of Clackamas, scored on a 2-yard rush up the middle to make it a 10-7 game. “It was a super serious game,” Line said. “The other team was trash talking us a lot.” Aside from the game, players also were involved in several activities throughout the week. Overall, Line, who reports to Eastern Oregon University for training camp on Aug. 8, said that his experience over the course of the week was a memorable one. “It was pretty fun and nice to meet and play with a bunch of good players,” he said.
