Hundreds of princesses, superheroes, mermaids and pirates crowded the sidewalks and spilled into the closed-off streets downtown as they worked with their parents to get their trick-or-treating in before dark. Brandi Verley of Gems and Gents Kids Center was handing out candy Monday for the fi rst time, and said she was glad the city puts on a fun alternative to nighttime trick-or-treating for its youngest residents. “It’s a really good, fun event and it’s nice to have a safe place for the kids to go, and nice to be a part of it this year,” she said. Verley, who was dressed as a sparkly blue and purple mer- maid, said one of the best parts of handing out candy was get- ting to see all of the creative costumes that go by. “The dinosaurs, they’re twins,” she said, pointing out a pair of pint-sized dinos. “Oh my gosh, so cute.” Terra and Luis Nava from Bloomz were handing out candy dressed as a Guns N Roses fan and Capt. Jack Sparrow, re- spectively. As a steady stream of children moved past, pump- kin-shaped buckets held high, Terra said it was fun to hand out treats and enjoy the creativity of the costumes. “I like the Stay-Puffed Marshmallow Man,” she said. Not all of the people handing out candy were adults. Payton Howard, 10, was handing out candy with a wave and a smile in front of Andee’s Boutique. “I love your family!” she exclaimed as a group of Dallas Cowboys fans walked by. One set of costumes drawing the most attention (and re- quests for photos) was a set of four M&Ms and an M&M package.
