Stoddard, mauiigor of tho Sumpter Lumber company, returned today from Taconm, whoro ho hold h conforeuco with Houry Hewitt, Jr., prosidout of the compuuy, regarding the prosout labor trouble Ho was accompanied ou his return by J. A. Hewitt, sou of President Hewitt, an fur usRukor City. Thoro Mr. Howltt missed tho traiu this morning and drove through tho country arriving this aftoruoou. Ho comes to com plete tho transfers of tho recent acquisitions of tho company and Issuo tho stock. It may bo that tho labor trouble has something to do with his visit, though this is uot oHlclally stated. Tho men employed ou tho dam uud mill site, twouty iu number, wore laid off at noon today, aud tho uuiou force omployod at tho sawmill aud plauors havo walked out, somo fifteen, ou account of tho com pany's employing Japs. All others employed on any of tho company's works, aud belonging to tho unions havo boon ordered out. Manager Stoddard says that tho company does uot proposo to go ahead with its big mill until there is a settlement of tho trouble, but lias given instructions to oporuto tho othor mill as long as help can bo secured. Ho has ordered all tho Japs to quit work, uud Buys that ho does not objoct to discharging them, but ho will uot bo diotated to by the labor union pooplo regarding tho management of his business. MAY DAY FESTIVITIES. Order of Parade and Other Features of Gala Occasion. The May Day celebration to be givou Friday under tho auspices of tho various tides organizations allllluted with tho American Feder ation of Labor, promises to be a great success in every way. Details aro rapidly boiug perfected for tho gala occasion. Colonel Emmott Callahan, the well known attorney of Maker City, will bo present and lollvor an address. Mayor McCol loch will also spouk, uud other orators will bo secured, liesides the speeches, a grand procossion will tako place, which will include tho various organizations of tho city. Tho following order will be ebserved: Speakers in carriages, city ottloiuls, bund, Musicians' Uuiou, school children, cooks aud waiters, laundry workers, clerks, miners, curpontors, puiutors, Fodoral Labor Union, blacksmiths, printers, cigar makers, burtoudors' loaguo uud teamsters. The day's fostivites will bo closod by a dance given at tho Ellis opera house under the management of the Eagles, which in itself promises a feature of much interest aud pleasure. BRILLIANT RECEPTION. Mndamea Herlockcr, Sorcntcn and Homer Entertain Thursday Afternoon. Mrs. Otto Horlocker, Mrs. Neil J. Soreusen and Mrs. E. H. Horner, gavo a brilliaut reception at tho homo of Mrs. Herlocker ou Granite streot, from 2 to 5 o'clock Thurs day aftoruoou. Tho home was most beautfiully aud artistically decorated. Tho color effects lent through tho drawn curtains, tasteful ly arranged lights, delicate and retlned floral decorations, mado tho ousemblo one of exquisite beauty. Vnn Sholck's orchestra secreted behind a bower of Oregon grape furnished the music for tho occasion. Those who assisted tho hostesses Iu receiving uud in serving the delicate refreshments provided were: Mesdumes Closs, Howard, Handle, Keur aud Hurt, uud Misses Spald ing, Hurt aud Culder. Vun Vleet, of the Gold ling, left Wednesday for the property and returned Sunday. Ho is getting ready to run a crosscut tunnel to tup the oro shoot on tho j.iu 1001 level, aumo iiiiiiciuiy, however, is boing encountered because of tho bud condition of tho roads, making tho hauling iu of supplies a big undertaking. Everything is doing mado ready, however, on the property, to increase the force and begin operations when the roads dry up. Tho blacksmith shop has been moved to the mouth of tho tunnel uud tho lagging timbers provided, so that no hitch will como from any luck of preparatory work. HURT-SPALDING RECITAL. Good and Appreciative House and Brilliant Entertainment. Tho rocltul given last night ut tho Ellis opera house by Misses Hurt uud Spalding was in ovory wuy u yiost pronounced succoss. Tho outortuin mout drew a largo aud thoroughly appreciative audionco. Tho young ladies showed their Mulshed train ing and the consummate skill of tho artist ontored into ovory selection. Each number was rouudly applauded and both porformors responded to sevoral oncores. Tho houso, although its literal tomporature was somewhat chilly, was in close sympathy aud warm accord with theso two brilliaut entertainers. Nor must the accompanist Le overlooked. Mrs. Anderson took this part, and performed it well, showing unquestionable ability iu this direction. It is needless to mid that everyone present was delighted with the evening's entertainment.
