Wayne Pittman assisted Frank Lit tle at the Quality Grocery, Wednes day. Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Gordon spent Sunday at the home of Mrs. Maggie Banister. The Etude Club will meet next Mon day night December 7, at the home of Mrs. E. B. Foster. ' Mrs. Claude Dickenson is visiting in Portland, the guest of her aunt, Mrs. Minnie Mitchell. Mrs. Henry Dell is entertaining the Athena Bridge Club at her home on Fifth street, this afternoon. Mrs. L. A. Cornell was called to "Walla Walla Thursday by the illness of her granddaughter, Arlene. . . Mrs. Mary Sharp, now residing in San Diego, California, renews her subscription to The Press this week. Asa Swan, Athena school bus driver has leased the Simpson farm on Wild Horse creek. Joseph N. Scott took the morning stage in Athena Monday, and went to Pendleton to transact business. Mr. and Mrs. John Milligan have moved from the . Zeltha Mclntyre cottage to the Sanford Stone proper ty on Fifth Street. Since deeper snow has covered the higher mountains, deer are reported to be drifting down in the draws and canyons of the foothills. Mr. and Mrs. Flint Johns and chil dren motored to Vancouver, Wash., where they spent Thanksgiving Day with Mrs. Johns' parents. The Triple Link club will meet at the home of Mrs. Boy Johnston Mon day. This meeting of the club was postponed from-November 30. Mr. and Mrs. W. L. Elder are plan ning to move to Athena for the winter months and will have housekeeping rooms with Mrs. Mary McKay. The Thimble Club will meet Tues day afternoon, December 8 at the home of Mrs. Charles Henry. All members are urged to be present. Mr. and Mrs. A. L. Jenkins and family have returned to their home in Athena after a holiday visit with relatives at Tacoma and Seattle. Two Walla Walla Valley orchardists have recently returned from mid western and southern states, where they disposed of 17 carloads of apples. Ray Hansell was in Athena from his mountain ranch the first of the week. He made the trip by team as mountain roads are impassable other wise. Th Weston Leader reports that Mr. and Mrs. Charles May of Ashland, have deeded their ranch on Weston Mountain to Frank Rambo, of Walla Walla., . ' Joe Cannon attended the meeting in Pendleton Thursday, the main fea ture of which was the address by "Farmer" Browijjj national Co-op speaker. ' - ;. ' Rev. and Mrs. Graham, who spent Thanksgiving at the home of their daughter, Mrs. Gordon Watkins, re turned to "'their home in Randle, Wash., Tuesday. A number of Athena home owners experienced frozen water, pipes dur ing the cold weather, and Jack Cald er, Athena-Weston utility plumber, was again in action. Mr. and Mrs. Everett Eager have returned to. their home at Dayton, Washington, after spending the re cent holidays at the home of their son C. M. Eager here. Thanksgiving day guests at ' the home of Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Kilgore included Mr, and Mrs. Chester Mc Cullough and son Ellsworth of Spo kane and Mrs. Mary McKay. Miss Lola Tucker of Toppenish, Washington,', visited her sister Mrs. Ray Jones -Thanksgiving. Mr. and Mrs. Jones spent Sunday and Mon day at the J. E. Jones home here. Mrs. Robert Cutler and daughter, Jerry arrived Sunday from Niskowin, Oregor, to visit at the home of her parents, Mr. And ilrs. George Payne until after tiie Christmas hoM ays. The Good-Time u -.ing club .gave a holiday dance Thanksgiving night at Evergreen Hall on Main street. A big crowd was in attendance ,w and everyone present reports a splendid time. ' - - Miss Jane Kavanaugh of Pendleton entertained at a bridge party Satur day night. Miss Kathleen Radtke, Miss Helen Hansell, Norman Mcln tyre , and Leonard Geissel motored down for the event. Mr. and Mrs. Will Kirk, Mr. and Mrs. R. L. Wilson, and Mr. and Mrs. Harden of Athena were guests recent ly at a pinochle party held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Philip Murtha, northeast of town. A temporary coal shortage was re lieved in Athena Tuesday, when the Farmers Grain Elevator company re ceived a carload. The Tum-A-Lum Lumber company is expecting a car load to arrive today. Ray Jones took a load of turnips to Walla Walla the fore part of the week. He had no difficulty in finding a ready sale for them. He raised a good crop of turnips this season on the Jones mountain ranch. At a seven o'clock dinner on Thanksgiving Day, Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Catron had as guests, Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Walker, Mr. and Mrs. H. M. Hale and daughters Margaret and Mary Jean and Sims Clarke. Mr. and Mrs. C. O. Henry enter tained at dinner on Thanksgiving Day, Mr. and Mrs. Lee Johnson, Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Catron, Alvin John son, Mrs. Ethel Montague, Miss Mar jorie Montague and Elmer Johnson. Mr. and Mrs. Clair Gurney have re turned to their home near LaGrande after spending several days visiting in Athena. The visitors report hav ing experienced sub-zero weather in their vicinity during the recent cold snap. Little Gene Miller suffered serious injury to one of his fingers when a playmate accidentally closed a door on the digit. The flesh was torn loose below the linger nail, but a prompt dressing of the wound makes "every thing all right," says Gene. Misses Helen and Mildred Hansell and Miss Kathleen Radtke attended the Phoenix Club dance in Pendleton last Friday night. Misses Helen Hansell-and Kathleen Radtke were house guests of Miss Adeline Mclntyre and Mildred visited at the home of Janet LaFontaine. The Depression tynb was enter tained "Friday night at the home of Miss Jrtle Campbell. Ten members and guests were present and passed the evening playing card games. Miss Mary. Bradford and Uin Nadine Bradford of Portland, ' were guests. Light refreshments were served by the hostess. , ; , , , ; ; ! R. B. McEwen and son Ralph are engaged in moving a large band of sheep to their winter feeding grounds in the Eureka Flat country, j The sheep came from the summer range in Idaho and were received by Mr. McEwen, for Portland parties, at Asotin, Washington. Night sleigh riding has! been the joyful pastime, of Athena youngsters the past week. Bobsleds drawn by horses with loads of merrymakers and jingling bells with once in a while an automobile running slow enough to permit a string of small sleds to hook on behind, have been gliding over the streets. The Leader reports that the last stretch of the Weston-Wild Horse road is receiving the final coat of rock, and the crusher will be moved in a few weeks to the Banister quarry in the lower part of Weston. Material will be prepared there for the LaMar gulch market road into Athena , and the branch from it into Weston. . The next meeting of the O. D. O. club is scheduled for Thursday after noon, December 10. A pleasant af ternoon was spent by the members Tuesday of last week when they were entertained at the home of Mrs. Claude Dickenson. Guests for the af ternoon were Mrs. Frank Sanders, Mrs. Henry Knight and Mrs. Zeph Lockwood. The Walla Walla home of Mr. and Mrs. William Lees was the scene of a family dinner on Thanksgiving day when they entertained Sims Dicken son, Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur Harden, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Knight of Athe na; Mr. and Mrs. Jack Cockburn of Waitsburg; T. P. DeFreece of Walla Walla, and Miss Hilda Dickenson of Arlington. Mr. and Mrs. Claude , Dickenson were hosts on Thanksgiving day and the following friends and relatives were guests at their home: Mr. and Mrs. Bryce Baker, Mrs. Sarah Gross, Sims Dickenson, Mr. and Mrs. A. W, Douglas, Aaron and Marjorie Doug las, Mr. and Mrs. Henry , Knight, Wayne Pinkerton and Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur Harden. - W. E. Campbell has three colonies of bees, one at his home near At na, one at his ranch and the third over on the Umatilla river Recently Bill played a; trick on the whole works and robbed it of 620 pounds of fine honey, which he is disposed to sell at this time, not being able to consume it himself; although he is not so cold as a honey eater, at that. While returning from Pendleton Wednesday of last week, the car of Max Hopper left the road and crash ed into a rocky embankment. It was during the recent snow storm and Mr. Hopper was not using chains, and the highway was unusually slippery. A wheel, fender, running board and glass were smashed, and the car dam aged so badly that a new one will re place the wreck. Fortunately Mr. Hopper'was not injured. An interesting meeting of Circle 10, Women of Woodcraft was held Tuesday evening at the Pythian-Odd Fellow hall. Mrs. Dick Swift and Mrs. Jesse Smith received the degree of initiation and the work was exem plified by the lodge from Weston, about thirty members motoring here for the event. A social hour was also enjoyed during which delicious chick en sandwiches and pickles, chocolate rolls and coffee were served by the following committee, Mrs. Will Har den, Mrs. Mary McKay, Mrs. Leon Miller, Mrs. Bun Moore and Mr. and Mrs. W. L. Elder. The Athena Pinochle club was en tertained Wednesday night at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Phillip Remil lard. About twenty-five members and guests were present, and pinochle was played during the first part of the evening followed by dancing. First prizes were awarded to Miss Myrtle Campbell - and Ed Montague, Mrs. Montague and Jesse Smith receiving the consolation prizes. ' Mrs. Arthur Jenkins and Mrs. Montague served appropriate refreshments of chili beans and coffee. The next meeting of the club will occur December 6 at the Montague home with Mrs. Potter and Mrs. Jesse Smith as hostesses. McKenzie Chapter O. E. S. met Wednesday night at Masonic hall. An nual election was held with the fol lowing result: Worthy Matron, Mrs. Marion Hansell; Associate Matron, Mrs. James Cresswell; Conductress, Mrs. Frank Little; Associate Conduc tress, Mrs. Gordon Watkins; Secre tary, Mrs. Louis Keen; Treasurer, Mrs. Homer Watts. Appointive of ficers will be announced later. Instal lation will be held meeting after next. Mrs. E. F. Bloom and Miss Mary Cameron were elected to membership and initiation will be held Wednesday night December 16. A social hour was enjoyed following the business ses sion when bridge was played Mrs. Marion Hansell served light refresh ments. Three principal cities of the East comprised the subject for considera tion Monday afternoon for the Study Club which met at the home of Mrs. J. W. Pinkerton, the meeting being postponed from last Fi-iday. Roll call was answered with Washington current events. Most interesting pa pers on the cities of Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington were pre sented by Mrs, Stella Keen, Mrs. F. B. Radtke and Mrs. M. W. Hansell, respectively. The club is now mov ing southward, the" study for next Friday which will be at the home of Mrs. Hansell, being: "Virginia and the Carolinas," by Mrs. Boyd and "Kentucky and Tennessee" by Mrs! Rogers. In addition to club members those present included Mr. and Mrs. Laurence Pinkerton, Mr. and Mrs. Archie Mclntyre and Mr. and Mrs. Clark. Following dinner four tables of pinochle, the club game, were in play. High scores were made by Mrs. D. A. Lowe and M. I. Miller, and con solation prizes were presented to Mrs L. A. Cornell and JDick Swift Mrs. Archie Mclntyre won the guest prize. Mr. and Mrs. Dick Swift will enter tain the club , at the next meeting, when a feature of the evening will be a Christmas tree. A group of Athena ladies motored to Pendleton Tuesday afternoon to attend a meeting of the dramatic de partment -wf the Woman's Club at the home of Mrs. Roy Raley.
