Geo. Hutton had a narrow escape
from injury at the quarry yesterday
through the parting of one of the ca
bles. Mrs. J. II. Shields, Mrs. S. S.
Shields and families camped at Four
Mile last week and had lots of fun and
berries.
A double cala lily is the latest Han
don product to call for inspection.
This one was grown in the yard of J.
II. Shields.
The steamer Dispatch is to be laid
up for repairs, overhauling1 and a
general renovating. Her place is being
taken by the Favorite.
Mrs. Edna Strauhl has been ap
pointed by the county court as admin
istratrix of the estate of her late
brother Arthur D. Mills.
Notwithstanding conflicting ru
mors, the wedding nnd installation in
the Odd Fellows lodge will take place
tomorrow night as originally sched
uled. C. McC. Johnston and family re
turned recently from a trip to San
Francisco and the big fair. They re
nort locating the Feeney family at the
StDunstan apartments in the city.
Word received from Dr. Mann and
Geo. ljiird who went by auto from
Handon to San Francisco are to tho
effect that they followed a storm all
the way down and had bad roads in
most places to encounter
Miss Susy McGinty who has been
visiting with relatives at Fish Trap
during the month past, returned to
Handon Saturday. Her sister-in-law,
Mrs. P. J. McGinty acompanied her
coming up to Handon for a day's visit.

Mrs. F. M. Haxter of Coquille was
a visitor in Handon Monday.

There was a big farmer's picnic at
Norway Saturday attended by all the
farmers of the neighborhood. A big, !

a great time is reported.
It is reported that Captain Willard
has disposed of his interest in the
Coquille river Transportation compa
ny nnd will refit the Wolverine as the
neuclus of another steamboat line.
Water service in the higher parts
of the city is much improved by tho
water improvements the city is con
ducting, putting in a new main and
other work. The service there is now
the best it lias ever been.
Its a case of off again on ngain with
the roads between here and Port Or
ford, according to F. H. Ticehenor
who drives an autostage between this
city and that town. Early last week
the roads were bad following the rain,
but they soon dried up and nre now in
fine condition.

A company of friends, mostly
participants in the late pageant and
captained by Mrs. E. ljuwin arranged
a little picnic as a surprise to Mrs. J
L. Kronenberg in the woods last Sun
day afternoon. That lady was persuml
ed to go for a ride nnd when the auto
had arrived at the pageant grounds
she found tho party awaiting her. A
table was spread under tho trees and
all enjoyed a picnic dinner. A short
program followed the meal the rend
ing of nn acknowledgment of Old Ma
ry's "Card of Thanks" by It. 11. Swen
son, a short talk by G. T. Treadgold
in which he again voiced his original
suggestion that the grounds suround
ing be bought and used as a park, and
a reading by Mrs. Averill.

POINT VIEWS AT THE GltAND
Photo play fans wil have an oppor
tunity to see the Marshtield and .Myr
tle Point celebration as preserved in
moving pictures by Mr. Westleder of
this city. The events filmed were of
exceptional interest, being the races
at Myrtle Point, the log rolling con
tests, swimming races and other
sports.
The pictures taken in Marshtield
give excellent views of the parade,
the crowds, and all athletic contests.
A novel feature of the picture is the
surf boat riding behind a mast motor
boat. This picture is of exceptional
interest. In all the thousand feet of
film secured many Haudoninns who
took part in the celebration will no
doubt find themselves in the picture.
The films wil be on exhibition at
the Grand theater next Saturday, Ju
ly 17. He sure and see this interest
ing film of the fourth of July cele
biation.
The regular stage to Coquille, leav
ing Handon at 0 o'clock went over the
grade on the road near I.ampa. The
passengers in the car consisted of !
traveling one of whom, the popular
Matt May of Mnrshfield is reported
to have had his shoulder dislocated
as a result of the accident. The others
escaped with nothing but scratches.
The car was making some speed at
the time and a loose stone did the trick
James Walstrom is trying out a new
work truck brought up on the Eliza
beth and to be used for delivery pur
poses. The truck is an International,
gotten out by the harvester combina
tion and is heavily built, capable of
carrying a large load.
Mrs. J. A. Hyrne is employed as a
stenographer in a Coquille office dur
ing the absence of the regular sten
ographer in San Francisco ami at the
fair.
Miss Gladys Treadgold, teacher at
Billiards was the loser of a watch
through the burglary of the school. A
man named Fred Smith was arrested
at Mnrshfield charged with the theft
and the teacher secured her watch a
gain. Mrs. John L. Anderson will as soon
as the weather and roads permit, jour
ney to Hoseburg to visit relatives.
From there she will go to Med ford,
Cottage Grove anil other points to
visit and will be gone two or three
months.

Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Long and family

auto ride to Myrtle Point last Sunday.

in a miner's pan while there. The own
