NORTH I5KND LAIIOR TROURI FS
Contractor Sandhcrg gels into Hoi
Water With Hay Town Citizens on
the Matter of His ployos.
There was a good deal of feeling
among some of the North Ilend people
today because of the employment of
outside labor on the part of lid ward
Sanberg, who has tho contract for
building the Connecticut avenue sower
or.
Mr. Sanberg had some local men
employed and it is stated that he dis
charged these men to make places for
Finhiiiders whom he brought in hoi'fl
yesterday.
The position was taken by many
in North Rend that tho money for tht
sower was paid by the propertyowner:.
und that in the employment of labor
local people should bo given prefer-1
once, especially as there were quite a ,
number out of work.
Mr. Sanberg stated today that there
wns nothing in his contract requiring
binr to employ local men but that he
wanteij to as far as was necessary for
him to have some experienced ditcher-;
and pipe layers and that he had sent
for them. lie claimed that Iho work
could not be done at a profit if he had
to employ inexperienced workmen.
It was stated that the foreigners'
who had been brought in here wore ;
arranging to live in a house by them
selves ar.d do their own cooking and :
that others had secured board at a i
very cheap rate in Marshfield and
were walking back and forth to and ,
front work. It was also claimed that '
the men were to be paid very small
wages. Those facts made quite a stir I
at North Rend and there was a good ,
deal of talk. Nothing definite had 1
