It's un fortunate that tho color gray is so intimately connected with two dis agreeable ideas decav and chill Without analyzing my own thoughts I am apt, by viewing the gray build ings, streets, cliffs and ocean, and be ing surrounded by the neutral chro matic values on all sides, to be at first impressed that Bandon is es sentially a decaying and chilling community and unless met by an un usuul warmth of reception by its cit teens and an alertness decidedly en livening, retain in memory a dis agreeable impression as a stranger and a visitor. As Woodrow Wilson .charges, our industrial impression, the fault is purely pyschological a flaw in my own composition. However, not cv eryone is going to take tho pains to diagnose the trouble, and this live city must inevitably suffer harm to a modest extent no doubt, by an in ability or inertness of visitors to find for themselves those spots that contain remarkable color and by that I don't necessarily mean house paint or hollyhock blossoms but the subtler mental colors; those sensi tive to more than tho mere sense of vision. I found such a spot, and very glad I was to spend an hour there. An artistic touch, such as your public library in a city that even you will confess is not ovarly artistic cirically, is a tremendous boon to eyes tired by long contemplation of dismal, gray reaches of sand and surf. Furnished in warm brown, suggest ing comfort and relaxation, with op en rafters above and long, convenient racks of tastefully selected books, neat arrangement of windows, com bined with the warm courtesy of the gracious librarian, I want to say that I think no similar institution in ths state compares in artistry with your present temporary library building. I hope when tho permanent ono is erected, ns I understand it will be soon, that the present color scheme will be carried into it, and force out the uso of gray granite pillars, gray cement stucco work, gray stone floors and gray terra cotta, such as" is so often used for public buildings, Nature 'provides plenty of grayiiess on the Pacific coast, but there are a few things we human boings feel we can do in a manner somewhat super ior to old Mother Nature. It has taken many words, to ex press my appreciation of the one place where an utter stranger is made to feel at home, where no pay is ask ed for hospitality extended, and want to say again, that your public library does much to relieve a vis iblo and mental gray prospect to A STRANGER UNREQUITED LOVE CAUSES SUICIDE AT COQUILLE. jive umjii. iJjjIJ''. 4 Wui.wU.ii t y,, ulii mmm mA t'kgMjH) Jto itfifii' ' iViil M mm iluitU Coquille. Leroy Casoy, a young man of 23, committed suicide Friday evening near Lee by shooting him self through the heart with a 25-20 carbine. Tho cause of his act was the fear that a young lady with whom he had been keeping company had trans ferred her affections to some one else. Tho young man came hero about two years ago from Walla Walla, where his father resides, and had been working for Mr. King on the Winsor & Falkenstein ranch a mile above tho Fox bridge on the north fork. Revival meetings had been in progress near by, and it is said that the young lady had attended in com pany with another man. On Friday ovening Casey had a conversation with her and asked her if she had gone back on him. She treated the matter lightly and avoided a direct answer. Then he told her if she de serted him he would kill himself. She did not think him in enrnest. This was about 7:30. About 9 o'clock, af ter Mr. and Mrs. King had retired and Mr. King had gone to sleep, Mrs. King heard Casey como into the largo tent in which they were all sleeping, go to tho corner in which two guns were kept, and go out ngln. She nroso and wont to tho corner, finding that tho carbine was mianing. She awakened hor husband, but ho thought little of tho mntUir. Then slut hwinl the report of a gun n nhort ilistiincn nway.
