E NGAGEMENT Free legal consultations available The Oregon Law Center, a nonprofi t law fi rm, will pro- vide free legal consultations with an attorney to eligible low-income individuals with civil legal programs in John Day. Appointments must be scheduled ahead of time by calling the center, 1-888- 250-9877. The Ontario offi ce is open from 8-11:30 a.m. and 12:30-4 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays. The legal consultations will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Feb. 9 at the De- partment of Human Services offi ce, 725 W. Main St., John Day. Farm Bureau scholarships available Two Oregon Farm Bureau Foundation scholarships are available for the upcoming school year. Oregon Farm Bureau me- morial scholarships are avail- able to agriculture or forestry majors, or children or grand- children of current Oregon Farm Bureau voting mem- bers. An Oregon Farm Bureau associate member scholarship of $1,000 is available to a stu- dent from a family that has an associate membership with the Oregon Farm Bureau and insurance from COUNTRY Financial. Elks Lodge awards scholarship John Day Elks Lodge No. 1824 has awarded its Most Valuable Student scholar- ships. He graduated from Grant Union High School in 1998, and attended Walla Walla Community College and Lewis and Clark State Col- lege. He is currently employed as a professional cowboy and rancher. The wedding will be held May 13, 2017, in Prairie City. O BITUARIES Josephine A. Howell March 15, 1920 - Jan. 14, 2017 Josephine A. Howell, 96, passed away peacefully Saturday, Jan. 14, at Regency Care Center, formerly known as Ochoco Care Center, in Prineville. Howell was born to Arthur and Elizabeth Haldy on March 15, 1920, in Tennessee. She graduated from Sherwood Union High in Sherwood in the spring of 1938. She then went on to receive her Bachelor of Arts degree from the Pacifi c College in Newberg in June 1942. She acquired her teaching certifi cate May 25, 1944, from the Common Schools of the state of Washington in Chelan, Washington. Howell taught school in the Mt. Vernon, Monument and Spray School districts. Prior to her retirement, she was the li- brarian at Spray and went on to become the deputy clerk after Babe Stevens retired. She then retired to her home in Spray. She met her husband, Everett Howell, at a picnic hosted by friends determined that she and Everett meet. They became lifelong friends and partners until his passing. They were mar- ried one month shy of 68 years. They shared many interests during their marriage. She was preceded in death by her husband, Everett, and all of her siblings except one sister. She is survived by her sister, Frances Haldy of Kansas City, Kansas, and many nieces and nephews. A memorial service is being planned for a later date. Memo- rial contributions may be made to the Spray Pioneer Museum. A CADEMIC R EPORT Blue Mountain Eagle Malachi Teague of John Day earned dean’s list recognition at George Fox University for the fall 2016 semester. Tradition- al undergraduate students must earn a 3.5 grade point average or above on 12 or more hours of graded work to earn a spot on the dean’s list. Teague is a senior ma- joring in nursing. The family of Jack Cavender wish to express our deep appreciation and gratitude for all the wonderful words of kindness, cards, flowers, food and help during our time of sadness. To those who have donated so generously to the Monument Senior Citizen Association, thank you. It is an organization he helped found and was very passionate about. We also would like to thank Blue Mountain Hospice, especially Teresa, Michelle, Richard, Angie, and Jessie for your never ending support. He always looked forward to your visits.
