Eventually, the team wrapped up the summer season at a Gonzaga team camp in Spo- kane, Wash. There, they com- piled a 5-3 record in one of the top pools at the camp. “We played teams from Washington, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming and Canada at the camp,” Speth said. Following the camp, the team enjoyed time at the Sil- verwood amusement park near Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, before the long bus ride home. Tour members stopped by the Squeeze-In restaurant for lunch on the deck. The members were on their way home from traveling through Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia since July 25. Mahayla, who was in the children’s 7 years and younger division, said this was her first time compet- ing. When asked if anyone else in her family was ever a seed-spitter, she boast- ed, “Nope, I’m the first in my family ever to do it!” Her choice of seeds is simple — “I just saw some seeds in the watermelon and got them.” As for her technique — without revealing any de- tails, in case it’s a secret — let’s just say she uses her tongue and then “gives it a good blow.” For her efforts, Mahayla won a 2015 “Seed Spitting Champion” T-shirt. “Maybe you’ll see me at the fair someday wearing it,” she said.
