Given up as dead 12 month« ago a Birmingham (E n g.) soldier has returned to his fiunily. The discov ery that he was a prisoner of war came about in quite an interesting qnd curious fashion. A chum, who enlisted with him, went "over the top*’ in an attack recently, and ae- cored the surrender o f a German wounded in the hand. In British •porting spirit, Tommy commenced to render rough first aid, as the wound was bleeding badly, and thou, according to his letter home, “ all went black, and I felt like putting my bayonet through him, for he was wearing poor o ld ------ ’« rin g ” The soldier went on to say that he threat ened Frits with summary éxecution, thinking he had robbed the dead; end the Bavarian implored him to * a y his hand, and in broken Engliah was emphatic that the missing m in was a prisoner, and had bartered the ring to him for food, after the miss ing Tommy had lain out two nighta with a bed wound in the arm and was picked up by the enemy. Further questioning elicited that he had been sent to one o f the big prisoners’ camps and later on to do work be hind tiie lines on an eastern front. ▲ few days ago the German's state ment that their son was alive was confirmed by a letter from him to his lu n ily. South Dakota has never claimed to he the abode o f m illionaires, says the Aberdeen (S . D .) American. Undoubtedly the men who have a m illion can be numbered on tile fin- g e n , even though the whole state be canvassed. That this state ia paying hundreds o f thcfaaands in income taxes while other states are paying their m illions ia nothing to worry about. South Dakota baa d o slums and no p o v - lum. The swing in South Dakota describes a small, arc because moat people are neither very far above nor very far below a state o f comfortable living. South Dakota paid $49,164.33 tax on personal incomes and $812,248.13 for corporations. Jn comparison New York turned in 180 millions for the first item and about the T h e p resid en t, M rs. J. I have lived a longer time than al most any man now in public life. It must be very difficult for the present generation to reconstruct for them selves the world into which I was born, things are so completely changed. The Napoleonic wars were still a living memory. Many people w fy were by no means old when I was a boy had seen General W ashington, and when I was ten years old men who were as old then as I am new were fourteen yean o f age at the time o f the Declaration o f Independ ence. Slavery was in existence in the Southern state«, and was to re main in existence until I was a grown iqan and a priest. Machinery was just coming into use, but nobody dreamed of the extent to which it would be employed later on. Electri city in ell its use« was almet un dreamed of. Bernard A. Flood, who has the reputation o f being one o f the finest detectives o f the New York city police force, has been attached to the staff o f General Perahing. Hi* missions in the pest in search of offenders and in causing their arrest have taken him to the chief cities o f Europe and South America, and the New York police department loans him t? the federal authorities for the highest sort o f "special in telligence” work. There has been much discussion as to the cause o f this sound. Probably it ia aimply the Aeolian harp effect, and and its occurrence depends chiefly upon the direction o f the wind in relation to the direction in which the wires run. Variations in the pitch o f the sound depend upon changes in the tension o f the wires with vary ing temperature. a ssssso o o o sm s s s s x is s s v v v W . W .
