Polk County Education Polk County Itemizer-Observer • September 7, 2016 13A New school year, new faces Soar: Focus on parents, kids Continued from Page 14A “It’s always been important to me to work, eventually, in a small community, to kind of put roots down,” she said. “I have a 4-year-old son, so I wanted to get settled in one community to raise him in the same community within the schools.” Drennen said her focus in the first year is to get to know her students and families. She spent the first day of school at the front door, greeting students as they arrived. She said she will work to improve attendance this year and implement “service days.” “Options for all of our kids, K-3, to get out in the com- munity — to own this community because it is theirs — and find ways that they can give back,” she said. She’s excited help with the district’s first year of inte- grating Project Lead the Way science and math curricu- lum into classes and to work with Oakdale’s staff. She found in the results of a buildingwide survey that Oakdale’s teachers share her goals: providing a safe and nurturing environment and offering students a quality education. “I thought, I’m in the right place,” she said. JOLENE GUZMAN/Itemizer-Observer Dallas School District hired 16 new teachers for the 2016-17 school year. The group attended new teacher train- ing at the district office on Aug. 22. The new hires are (not in order): Jillian Herbes, Matt Lenoue, Jim Moran, Malynda Shook, Marianne Hatch, Teresa Fenton, Jordan Sollman, Katie Bradley, Arriel Robinson, Sandra Pinion, Rachel Wheeler, Jack Davis, Samantha Hauck, Connie Abel, Melissa Glazner and Julie Bryant (not pictured above). Brazeau: Not making big changes Continued from Page 14A Brazeau said he, the build- ing leadership team, and the teachers are working on get- ting those skills worked into the regular classes through- out the day, but it will take time to make that happen. As for changes in the cul- ture, Brazeau said he isn’t the right one to ask. “I can tell you that my ex- perience is: we’ve had a lot of people out to professional development; we’ve had a lot of people in,” he said. “At least the folks I’m dealing with and myself in the ad- ministrative group: we’re having a great time.” P OLK C OUNTY W ORSHIP D IRECTORY DALLAS Calvary Chapel Dallas Currently meeting for worship and verse by verse Bible teaching at 628 SE Jefferson St. www.calvarydallasor.com Worship service begins at 10 a.m. on Sunday.
