MONMOUTH — Western
Oregon’s women’s basket-
ball squad experienced tri-
umph and heartbreak dur-
ing a pair of home games
last week.
Freshman Sami Osborne
scored a team-high 16
points as the Wolves upset
No. 8 Seattle Pacific 67-62.
Katie Goddard added 11
points, including a 3-point-
er that gave WOU a five-
point lead with two minutes
left in the game. Dana
Goularte returned from an
ankle injury to score 10
points, grab six rebounds
and dish out six assists.
“From start to finish, we
played like we were going to
win the game,” Western Ore-
gon coach Holli Howard-
Carpenter said. “We played
with poise and toughness
(the entire game).”
Playing in the ROOT

MEN’S BASKETBALL
REACHES MILESTONE: West-
ern Oregon’s men’s basketball
team had an offensive explo-
sion, but it was its defense that
starred last week. The Wolves
held Simon Fraser to 41.7
points below its season aver-
age during a 114-75 win on
Thursday. Jordan Wiley scored
a career-high 26, while Andy
Avgi (23 points) and Marwan
Sarhan (20 points) also reached
the 20-point mark. The Wolves
also earned a 90-87 win over
Western Washington on Satur-
day. Junior Julian Nichols hit
one of two free throws with 1.4
seconds remaining and Avgi
grabbed the rebound to pre-
serve the win. Avgi scored 21
points, giving him more than
1,000 career points. WOU im-
proved to 16-3 overall and 8-1
in Great Northwest Athletic
Conference play to remain in
first place, the team’s best start
since it joined the conference
in 2001. WOU hosts Montana
State Billings on Thursday and
Seattle Pacific on Saturday.

DALLAS — The Dallas
girls basketball team is
looking to prove it belongs
in the discussion to be
among the Mid-Willamette
Conference’s top teams
after splitting a pair of
league contests.
The Dragons opened the
week with a 65-47 win over
South Albany on Jan. 20.
Taylor Fennel scored a
game-high 22 points. Dallas
outscored South Albany 23-
9 in the third quarter, ex-
tending its lead to 22 enter-
ing the final period.
The Dragons kept within
striking distance against
Corvallis during the first
half, but lost 49-37 on Fri-
day. Sarah Mitchell led Dal-
las with 14 points.
“I think (Corvallis was) a
little more aggressive and
played with a little more
sense of urgency,” Dragons
coach David Brautigam said.
Dallas played Crescent
Valley Tuesday after press
time and faces Lebanon Fri-
day at 7:15 p.m.
“This is a big week for us.
We need to beat the teams
we should be able to beat
and handle our business,”
Brautigam said.
CENTRAL REMAINS UN-
BEATEN IN LEAGUE PLAY:
Junior Kylie Nash came up big
as Central’s girls basketball
team remained unbeaten in
Mid-Willamette Conference
play ahead of a showdown
with Corvallis. The Panthers
defeated Crescent Valley 48-36
on Jan. 20 and Lebanon 46-42
on Friday. Nash scored 17
points and had seven assists
against the Raiders, while Sai
Tapasa added eight points.
Nash recorded a game-high 23
points against Lebanon. Cen-
tral (9-4 overall, 4-0 MWC)
hosted Silverton Tuesday after
press time and plays at Corval-
lis on Friday. The Spartans en-
tered the week undefeated in
league play. “We haven't
played great the last two
games, but have been able to
pull out wins,” Central coach
Julie McDonald said. “Hopeful-
ly this week we come pre-
pared and ready.”

STREAK: Falls City’s girls bas-
ketball team continued to roll,
extending its win streak to five
games last week . Tierra
Reynolds scored 20 points and
Allison Kidd added nine points
as the Mountaineers defeated
Jewell 38-20 on Jan. 20. Falls
City defeated Willamette Val-
ley Christian 36-32 on Friday as
Brittany Varney scored a
game-high 16 points. The
Mountaineers played Country
Christian, the Casco League’s
top team, Tuesday after press
time. Falls City travels to play
C.S. Lewis’s junior varsity
squad on Friday.
PERRYDALE HANGS ON:
Holding a 31-21 lead over
rival St. Paul entering the
fourth, Perrydale coach Terry
Newton expected a close bat-
tle. Newton was right, as the
Pirates held on for a 39-37 win
on Friday. “St. Paul and Perry-
dale have been major rivals
for years,” Newton said. “We
were able to make some plays
at the end.” Cheyenne Locke
scored 13 points, while
Telaney Newton added 10
points. The Pirates (9-6 over-
all, 4-3 Tri-River Conference)
defeated Santiam 51-28 on
Jan. 20. Locke and Hannah
Mitchell scored 13 points
each. The Pirates played
Kennedy Tuesday after press
time. Perrydale hosts Central
Linn Friday at 5:30 p.m. before
playing at Regis on Monday.

defeated at the duals to lead
Central. The Panthers began
their week with a win over Sil-
verton on Jan. 21. Central and

lar season winding down,
Dallas’ swim team is looking
ahead toward districts after
competing in three meets.
South Albany swept the
Dragons on Jan. 20, winning
116-47 on the boys side and
114-51 on the girls.
At the Dallas/Central In-
vitational on Thursday, the
girls took third out of six
teams, while the boys
placed fifth.

about. For six former WOU
athletes, it’s a dream that’s
about to become reality.
Western Oregon Universi-
ty will recognize its 2014 Hall
of Fame inductees Friday at
5:30 p.m.
Nominations for the Hall
of Fame are accepted from
the public.
Inductees are:
• Jim Luke played baseball
for the Wolves from 1960-63.
He was a three-time all-con-
ference selection and was the
team batting leader for three
seasons, hitting .375, .367 and
.338. Luke played on the 1960
squad that won the NAIA na-
tional title.
• Darrell Brandt played
both men’s basketball and
baseball in 1964. He received
Oregon College of Educa-
tion’s Outstanding Athlete
award in 1964 and was in-
ducted into the NAIA District
II Hall of Fame in 1981.
• Bruce Bradshaw was a
guard on the men’s basketball
team from 1965-68. Brad-
shaw died Jan. 20, 1968, after
suffering a head injury during
a road game against Eastern
Oregon University.
• Bridget Cooke was a track
and field and cross-country
standout from 1979-83. She
holds the school record in the
10,000-meter run (36 min-
utes, 16.95 seconds) and
ranks second in the 5,000
(17:28.82).
• Jim McCann was a six-
time all-American in the
long jump and triple jump
from 1994-97. He went un-

(91) and doubles (23).

Sign-ups open for golf tournament
DALLAS — Cross Creek Golf Course will host the 13th Annual
Brockway Memorial Golf Tournament on Feb. 7. The two-person
scramble will begin at 9:30 a.m.
Cost is $45 and includes green fees, hole prizes and tee prizes.
Players do not need a handicap to compete, and the field is open
to men, women and mixed teams.
The tournament is dedicated to Marius “Brock” Brockway who
died in 2013.
A portion of each entry fee will be dedicated to the OGA Junior
Tournaments held each year at Cross Creek. Brockway helped
start the tournaments.

HILLSBORO — Dallas
senior Matt Hofenbredl has-
n’t seen the wrestling season
he planned, missing several
tournaments.
But Hofenbredl made a
big statement at the
Reser’s Tournament of
Champions on Saturday,
placing first in the 132-
pound division.
“Matt took a hiatus dur-
ing the season to rest his
knee,” Dragons coach Tony
Olliff said. “But one of his
goals was to win the Tour-
nament of Champions this

MEET: Central’s boys swim
team placed fourth out of six
teams at the Dallas/Central In-
vitational on Thursday. Senior
Nathan Glade won the 100-
yard backstroke in 1 minute, 5.9
seconds, while freshmen Daniel
Glade placed second in the 500
freestyle (5:43.33) to lead the
boys. The girls finished fifth out
of six teams. The relay team of
Annie Taylor, Caitie Miller, Sara
Wright and Kate Taylor won the
200 medley relay in 2:15.99.
MONMOUTH — The National Collegiate Baseball Writers of
America picked Western Oregon’s baseball squad as the eighth
best team in the West Region Preseason Poll on Friday.
WOU received 18 points. Chico State was selected to finish first.
Two Western Oregon players received preseason recognition.
Senior infielder Garret Harpole and senior pitcher Eric Huson
were named to the NCAA Division II NCBWA Preseason All-West
Region Second Team.
The Wolves are coming off their 13th straight Great Northwest
Athletic Conference regular season title.
WOU went 30-21 overall and 22-10 in league play during the
2014 season.
Western Oregon opens its 2015 campaign Sunday through
Tuesday against the University of California, San Diego.

Kylie Nash
Central High
Nash, a junior, played a big role during
the Central girls basketball team’s recent
victories over Crescent Valley and
Lebanon. Nash scored 17 points and
dished out seven assists during a 48-36
victory over the Raiders on Jan. 20. She followed that per-
formance with a game-high 23 points as the Panthers de-
feated the Warriors 46-42. Nash has played a key role in Cen-
tral entering the week on an eight-game win streak.

Western Oregon
Avgi, a redshirt junior, helped Western
Oregon’s men’s basketball squad extend
its win streak to six last week. Avgi scored
23 points against Simon Fraser on Thurs-
day. He also grabbed eight rebounds and
had one block. Avgi scored a team-high 21 points during
WOU’s 90-87 victory over Western Washington. Avgi sur-
passed 1,000 career points during the win as the Wolves im-
proved to 8-1 in league play.
