Benson, a copy of which has been reccivod at this of fice, contains some interesting fig ure regarding the political com plexion of the elective officers in the 33 counties. It shows that while the slate as a whole is heavily republican, a large number of dem ocrats are holding county and dis trict officers by virtue of election, not to mention many more that ure serving through appointment. This is a strong indication of the pro gress of independence of thought aud action ou the part of the voters, in local affairs, especiolly. The po- litical division of the officers in tho 33 counties of the state are set forth in the report as follows: Official Democrat Republican County .! mixes if is Clerks 8 10 Sheriffs 17 'M 27 Treasurers 7 AHHCMHOrH 10 School Suiitn. (i Two counties, Lake and Sher man, havo no official surveyors. Malheur county's surveyor is a So cialist and the one in Wallowa county is designated an "Independ ent". Aiuoug the remaining 2!) counties, the division is 7 demo crats and 22 republicans. There are 22 republicans and (i democratic coroners. Morrow conn- ty's coroner is a prohibitionist. Wheeler, Lake, Crook and Curry counties have no such official. Nine counties have recorders and all are republicans. Commissioners are.dividod into i3 democrats and 53 republicans. Of the circuit judges, ( are dem ocrats and 11 republicans; of the prosecuting attorneys, 5 are demo crats and H republicans. young and old. Mothers ithould keep it on hand fof children. Tho State railroad commission hold sessions at Ashland and Grants Pass Monday and Tuesday of this week to hear complaints in regard to the train service of the Southern Pacific, particularly regarding the faking off of trams Nos. 11 and 12. The testimony of a number of busi noss men of Ashland was taken Monday tending to show the in convenience to which the people of this r Dd of the State had been sub jected by the removal of the two trains mentioned, aud the running of the south bound mail trains within a few hours of each other. The company introduced no evi dence and contented itself with a cross examination of the voluntary witnesses. The finul report of the commis sion will be made on their return to Salem where the case will be argued by the attorney lor both sides. It was understood at Grants Pass Tuesday that the company would restore the trains, in the spring, as soon as business opens up to justify it, which is somewhat of a concession and would indicate that tho corporation is not so sure of its ground as it might be. The closed pouch service between Rose burg and Ashland, aud the freight train service betweeu Grants'Pass and Ashland are regarded as poor makeshifts at the best. There is a whole lot ol difference between rid ing in even a passenger coach at tached to a freight aud one" at tached to a regular train, espe cially if there is a good deal of switching to do and the engineer happens to be a little cross grained. In attendance on the hearing were Commissioners Oswald West and J. M. Atchison, C. L. Reames, attorney for the commission. The Southern Pacific officials present were: L. It. Fields, superintendent, Win. McMurray, G. P. A., W. II . 1 Jenkins, traveling passenger agent, W. l. Penton, attorney for the Southern Pacific Co. Medford Mail.
