At a recent Lane County teachers institute, Prof. Sampson delivered an able address upon "The Making of a Community," and in the course of his remarks ho gave ex pression to the following senti ments: Under the head of the .schools as a lactor in the motlcru community as he spoke of tho necessity for the parents to co-opeiato with the teachers in the work of education. The most vital point in school sys tem is the teacher, whose person ality must be such as to influence tho pupils in the right directions. Men will t-pend millions for rail roads, but are not so liberal for the schools. Tho last factor of the commuuity, the home must be such as to assist the teachers in their work. At this point Prof. Sampson in troduced some figures he had com piled of wages in Lugene. A few of them follow: Carpenters to $15. 50 a day. llricklayers $5 to $7 a day. Plasterers $2 to $2.50 a day. Common labor $ a day. School teachers (Lane county average) $;W a month. lie drew some interesting deduc tions from the table ho presented. While learning his trade- the plas terer is earning money, not full wages perhaps, but still he is earn ing. While tho school teacher is learning his trade he is not earning a cent, and is spending eight years of time end .fifioo a:.d jooo iu money. Another deduction he made was in regard to the difference required of the pertouality of the persona engaged. If tho plumber makes a mistake it is easily rectified, but if a toucher makes a mista'ico in deal ing wfth a child' the result is last ing and iuoffacublo. We do not enquire into the church stauding and the morals of the plasterer who is woikiug lor us, but we demand tho bebt iulluences to be about the school children.
