When came down to work this morning I felt so weak I could hardly work I went to Miller & McCurdy'sdrug store and they recommended Chamberlain's Colic, Cholera and Diarrhoea Remedy. It worked like magic and one dose fixed me all right. It certainly is the finest thing I ever used for stomach trouble. I shall not be without it in my home hereafter, for I should not care to endure the sufferings ol i last night again for fifty times its price, G. H. MINFR M V m ma 1 The Third of a Series of Articles on the Geo logical Construction and the Formation of Mineral Zones. contributed. . Owing to the revolutions which the crust of the earth has under gone, there has been pushed up to the surface from underneath the oldest fossiliferous strata certain very ancient crystaline rocks which form what is termed the Archsen system. These rocks, by some geolo gists, have been supposed to be part of the primeval crust of the planet which solidified from fusion; b others they have been thought to have been formed in the boiling ocean which first condensed upon the still hot surface of the globe. Of Archsen rocks the most abundant isgnesis, passing on the one hand into granite and on the other into micaceous and argillaceous schists, with interstratified various Hornbleudic, Pyrox- ine and Garnetiferous rocks, limestone, dolmite, serpentine, quartzite, graphite, hemetite, magnetite, etc. The bedding somewhat resembles that of sedementary rocks and the graphite occur recalls the way in which limestone and coal are found in fossiliferous formation. None of tlie Archarn rocks are cover the whole of Canada as far probably to the Arctic regions, as they also form the Appalachian range of mountains extending as far south ical history which treats of those ages of plants and animals lived is termed first appearance of organic life Whether plants or animals came first questions to which, as yet, no satisfactory answer can be given. The oldest discovered fossils are assuredly not that peopled the globe. The Paleozoic rocks, which contain the earliest record of plants and animal life, consists mainly of the hardened mud, sand and gravel of the sea bottom. Here and there they include beds or thick groups of beds of limestone composed of marine shells, crinoids, corals and other denizens of salt water. They are thus essentially the chronicles of the sea. Abundant evidence of volcanic action has been pre served among the Paleozoic rocks in the form of piles, lava and tuffs. We find also many indications of the crust of the earth. The life of the from the fossils which have been have been far more uniform over the whole globe than at any subse quent epoch in geological history, and the climate of the globe at that ancient date was doubtless more uniform than it afterwards became and was probably also generally warmer. Paleozoic lossils taken from high northern latitudes are precisely similar to those that abound in tropical countries, whence it may be inferred uniformity of climate, but that the great cold which now characterizes the Arctic regions did not then exist. It is evident that the number and in Paleozoic rocks afford only an imperfect record of the animal of those early ages. What tribes of creatures whatever has yet been recorded, moment reveal the former presence of some of those vanished forms. The Paleozoic rocks are divided into five systems which in the order of their age have been named (i) Cambrian, (2) Silurian, (3) Devonian, (4) Carboniferous, (5) Permian. The rocks of which the Cambrian system is composed, like those of the whole of the lower Paleozoic for mation, presents considerable uniformity over the whole globe. They consist of gtey and reddish grits and sandstone, greywack quartzite and conglomerate with thick groups of shale slate and phyllite. These sede mentary accumulations attain a great thickness in some countries. In the region of the great lakes they have been estimated by some ob servers to be at least 1400 feet in depth. Their ripple marks, pebble beds and frequent alternation of coarse and fine sediment"point to their hav ing probably been laid down in comparatively shallow water during a period of prolonged subsidence of sea bottom. They include tuffs and basic lavas, which indicate contemporaneous submarine eruptions. No Cambrian or undoubted Silurian rocks are found along the Cordilleras of the Pacific but are confined chiefly to the great lake region and into Canada. They also extend as far south as Northern Alabama and Mississippi. A MONSTER DEVIL FISH. Destroying its victim, is a type of Constipation.
