AilvertUli'K rutrn iitniln known upon application. Friday, Skvt. 221899. , Much abuse is heaped upon cor porations of all kinds, railroads in particular, for their oppressive measures, etc. Take it in our own locality, isn't the Southern Pacific railroad of material benefit to this section of the country? When times are hard and various busi ness enterprises are shut down, we cry for work, and what corporation or firm furnishes more employment for skilled and unskilled laborers today than the railroad. Why, even the tie plant, which did busi ness at Latham, is missed here. It furnished labor for many men, and it consumed thousands upon thous ands of feet of lumber from the Booth-Kelley Lumber Company of Saginaw, which on account of the demand by the Southern Pacific for lumber, necessarily employed more men than was needed had not the Southern Pacific lumber trade fallen to them. Well, yes the Southern Pacific, notwithstanding it is hit on every hand by news papers and individuals alike, is a pretty good thing for the countiy after all. It leaves many a dollar scattered about the country. The only real objection that we have to the Southern Pacific is that we haven't brains enough to run a business successfully that will em ploy as many men as does this same much-abused corporation. Bohemia Nugget has been the re cipient of many expiessions of ap preciation from the Cottage Grove boys who served in the Second Oregon at Manila, who received the Nugget free of charge from the date of its first issue to the time of their departure home. In ack nowledgment of the kind ex pressions tenderd Bohemia Nugget from these returned soldiers we have only to say that if the Nugget served in even one instant, to please and deviate any of the hardships and inconveniences of soldier life in the Philippines, we are paid twice over. Gilstrap Bros, who have leased thejtttegister, the official republican paper of Lane county, are improv ing their paper each week. Thev are wide-awake, enterprising news paper men and chuck full of ability. Success to .them. Dreyfus has been pardoned.
