And still the newspapers and
individual writers are filling space
lauding the virtues of Sam Simp
son, the "Burns ot Oregon." It
would have been well and their re
marks would have sounded just as
sweetly to the true admirer of Mr.
Simpson, had these newspapers and
writers chronicled a few words of
praise and commendation, in the
truly brilliant poets behalf while he
was yet among us. This cold blooded
way of criticising a man's short
comings in life and then extolling
his virtures after death, maybe
soothing to the loved ones left to
mourn, but it doesn't help the man
who always appreciated, and, oft
times needed sympathy iu life
now cold in death.
"When dreamless rest is mine I
shall not need
The tenderness for which I long
tonight."
While the prospects the past
week have not baen any too flater.
ing as to the safety of the corps of
this section of Oregon, still there is
much hope that the damage done by
the recent rains is greatly over esti
mated. If the weather clears as it is
now reasonable to believe it will, iu
a gradual way, it will greatly
lessen the damage. In Oregon out.
standing crops can stand con
siderable moisture, providing the
sun does not come out too bright the
first day or two after the drenching;
notwithstanding that wheat is
reported ruined and oats greatly
colored, many a bushel of prime
grain will be harvested yet.
Bohemia Mining District is at
tracting wide spread attention. It
is a steady-going camp, hence the
length of time required to get it be
fore mining speculators. However
this year demonstrates that Bo
hemia is becoming known outside
the green hills surrounding it.
Prominent men 'from important
points iu nearly every section of
of the United States have visited or
are intending to visit the district
this year. This is what is desired
bypropertv holders in the camp.
All they ask is, not to take "our
word for it, but come and be convinced."
At the recent special session of
the legislature of this state an en
actment provides that if the lessor
ot any mine, etc., shall have re
corded in the mining records of the
county wherein any such mine is
located a copy of any such lease be
fore the work shall have begun
thereon, claims for labor pel formed
or material supplied during the life
of the lease shall not become a lien
against the property.
It is a dull day down south
when the people do not get to
gether and lynch a few negroes. It
is a sign of enterprise to see the
business men of a community pull
together. This is what the South
ernj Colonels do soon alter throw
ing their rope on a darkey. It
may be said of the victims, also,
that they have a habit of hanging
together for the good of the com
munity. Ex.
Certain crops are greatly reduced
in Oregon some years by the con
tinuance of a summer rain, but never
yet, lias Oiegon recorded a com
plete crop failure, and there is no
reason to believe that this year's
crop will be a failure.
