Chamber Foundation gives out grants for another year
Fifteen community groups selected to receive funds
The Cottage Grove Community Foundation announces 15 Community Grant Award Recipients for
2017.
The foundation was founded in 1991 and has been giving out grants and scholarships every year
since its conception. Cottage Grove Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Travis Palmer said of
the latest round of grants, "We hope to continue to grow the amount of grants that we can give away
each year." He added, "Endowments are easier to set up than many people realize and they can be es-
tablished over time if need be. Every donor has their own individual reason for creating an endowment.
The nice thing about the community foundation is that it can connect donors to the people and organi-
zations that they are passionate about giving to."
The Cottage Grove Community Foundation (CGCF) is pleased to announce that fi fteen non-profi t or-
ganizations were selected as community grant recipients for a total of $15,980. Funding for the grants

Career classes taking off at Cottage Grove High School
By Caitlyn May
Career Technical Education (CTE) classes are making the dif-
ference for some students in Cottage Grove according to Ricardo
Flores.
Flores, a business instructor at the high school and department head for CTE, presented to the South
Lane School District Board on Monday, March 6.
During the presentation, Flores noted that CTE classes are a way for students to engage in their
school day and that Cottage Grove High School offers a wide variety of these courses, far more than
some other schools around the state and country.
Students who take CTE courses, which span from culinary to woodworking, for two years are con-
sidered "concentrates."
"There's an ebb and fl ow," Flores said in response to a question concerning how many students take
part in the CTE programs. "But there could be a fl ow of fi ve to 25 students when you talk about con-
centrates."
Cottage Grove High School offers several CTE courses in a variety of subjects. Engineering and
drafting allows students hand-on experience and the chance to earn College Now credits. College Now

credits enable high school students to earn college credits to put towards their degree at institutions like
Lane Community College.
"They have a 3D printer, laser cutter and plasma cutter," Flores said of the engineering program.
Other CTE categories at Cottage Grove High School include electronic media, health occupations,
culinary and child development and year book and photoshop. The business management and market-
ing program currently allows students to take part in marketing campaigns and advertising that can be
seen at the school's sporting events and a vending program inside the high school.
During the presentation, Superintendent Krista Parent asked if Flores was aware of any courses stu-
dents would like to take part in that the school does not currently offer.
"Probably a small engines class," Flores said. "Our kids are really into hands-on classes and into
automotive but we're lucky to offer all the different courses we have."
School board member Alan Baas asked if the district has presented the CTE program to local entities
such as the chamber of commerce. Flores noted that students are sent out on internships but that liabil-
ity issues had limited those experiences.
"No, we haven't but it would be a good opportunity," Flores said of visiting the chamber.
