2B COTTAGE GROVE SENTINEL February 4 , 2015 R OBERTS B OYS B ASKETBALL Continued from 1B Roberts admits that over the years he has received calls about other head coaching opportunities, but none have been tempting enough to lure him away. Ben Schorzman of the Register Guard reported on Twitter that Willa- mette, Churchill and North Eugene are currently looking to fi ll head-coaching vacancies. “There are a lot of perks to being in Cottage Grove that I’m not sure I would fi nd elsewhere,” he said. “I have a lot of support from the administra- tion; I like the people I work with; and the program is at a point where we are turning out good, productive kids.” G IRLS Additionally, Roberts feels that he has unfi nished business in Cottage Grove. “When I was hired, I said that I wanted to be competitive, year-in and year-out. And we’re not there yet,” he said. Considering his history with the program, Sheldon could be a logical target for Roberts when that position becomes available. However, he said that it would be a daunting task to fol- low in the footsteps of coaches Lane and Marty Johnson. “You don’t want to be the one to take over for a legend,” Roberts said. “You want to come after the one who took over for the legend.” BASKETBALL ticeable over the past two games is the absence of junior Jayden Tucker, who has not played since suffering a con- cussion on Jan. 13 against Stayton. In addition to being one of the team’s top scorers, Tucker has the most varsity ex- perience and — even at 6’2” — he is one of its tallest players. “It’s been hard watching the team struggle,” he said. “It’s a lot different being on the sideline and watching things happen, rather than out on the court. We need to be working harder, and we need our practices to translate better to our games.” Sophomores Kory Parent and Blake Sentman led Cottage Grove with 11 and 10 points, respectively. However, their scoring has noticeably tapered off since combining for 53 points in the Li- ons’ 79-69 win over South Umpqua on Jan. 2. “Things are easier when you’re not Continued from 1B The Lions traded baskets with Sweet Home in the third quarter, but Jutte closed out the game for the Huskies with six points and a host of other key plays in the fi nal frame. “He’s the bus driver. He’s the engine. He’s everything. He is by far the most talented player I’ve seen this season,” Gaskey said. While Cottage Grove was already at the bottom of the Sky-Em standings, Pollard did not look at Tuesday’s game as a must-win. “It’d be nice to get a win, but we’re not playing well enough to win in this league,” he said. Pollard noted that defense and turn- overs — of which the Lions committed 22 against Sweet Home — continue to be issues. One thing that has certainly been no- Tuesday, Jan. 27 Sweet Home 67, Cottage Grove 43 to 4-1 in the Sky-Em entering the sec- ond half of league play. Borigo led the Lions with 22 points and 14 rebounds. Miranda Jensen had 17 points for the Falcons. Continued from 1B “We knew Sutherlin would be our toughest test in the league, and we tried to take away things from that game for next time,” Borigo said. “We have to learn how to play against a team that is very aggressive, but if we can stop some of what they do Tuesday, Jan. 27 best and focus on us then I feel Cottage Grove 59, Sweet Home 25 that we would have a chance.” Jessica Stockaman and India Cottage Grove 20 13 10 16 — 59 8 3 8 6 — 25 Porter — daughter of Cottage Sweet Home Grove boys’ assistant Tim Porter — led Sweet Home with eight Cottage Grove: Borigo 30, Arnold 6, Nichols-Ferguson 6, Sayles 6, Thielman 5, and seven points, respectively. We should have an idea of what they’re going to do. And that’s very typical of league play. Those wide-open looks you get in non-confer- ence games suddenly aren’t there.” On paper, the Huskies looked to be an even matchup for Cottage Grove. Sweet Home even came into the game ranked slightly behind Cottage Grove in the OSAA power rankings, and Tucker said that the Lions might have been ex- pecting to win. “It didn’t look very equal on the court tonight, did it? So I guess it wasn’t,” Pollard said. “At fi rst I paid attention to those things, now I just throw it out the win- dow,” Gaskey said of the rankings. “We’re trying to make a run in league and we’ll see what happens.” L CG WOMENS VOLLEYBALL League: Set & Spike Date: Jan. 27 Team Timber Chicks Olson Electric Markham Electric Nice Hits O Ducks Horners Twisted Sisters W 29 28 19 13 11 10 7 L 4 8 14 20 22 23 26 League: CG Volleyball Assc.
