Every evening and all evening there may be noted along the streets in spots conveniently obsecure from the glare of the electric lights, old men, middle aged men, young men and boys, some armed with diminutive opera glasses, and the balance open-eyed, training their respective visions toward the northwest heavens They are looking for the comet. - Nine out of ten of them have as much lntrest in the; comet as curiosity prompts, and are woefully disappointed because they are not treated to a reg ular celestial dime museum freak, with radlent nucleus, streaming coma and a tall as long and brilliant as one of Rider Haggard's stories. But the truth of tho matter is that this comet i strictly a scientific and not a popular body a sort of Chautauquan conven tion, as It were- At its most elaborate full-dresH, and resplendant stage, the tho stranger apppeared as a sort of a nebulous spot about a bright as a star of the third magnitude and as un ndmlrublo as a being of that class in the theatrical firmament. Its greatest spread of tall was less than ten minutes of arc; which, interesting enough from a telescopic standpoint, does not amount to shucks when seen with the naked eye from a street corner stand point. Since July 15th, it has been waltzing oft into space in its hyper bolic path and now the tall is only about five minutes of arc In length and isn't very much of a yarn at that. If a fellow is really stuck on comet" and wants badly to fill a mental ach ing void with this one, let him line Polaris and the Pointers of Ursa Major, otherwise the Dipper; about forty .de grees above the horizon and along the line, at ten o'clock p. m., he will see two stars of the third magnitude, known as Iota and Kappa, of the con stellation Lynx? A little down and to the left he will see three faint stars forming almost an equilateral triangle, which stars are in the constellation Leo Minor; and Just an inch or so be low the right hand basic star he can espy Mr. Comet and be happy- He needn't take a glass, unless he wants to, and with a dozen or so aboard lie can possibly see four or five comets and any quantity of new const'ellatlonlc combinations.
