ASTOBIA. OREGON:
FHIDAY ...DECEMBER C.18S9.
A NORWEGIAN SETTLEMENT IN
MASSACHUSETTS FIVE HUN
DRED YEARS BEFORE
COLUMBUS.
"Watehtowx, Alass., one o the oldest
towns in Massachusetts, celebrated
on November 21, the discovery o the
ancient town or city of Nonunbega by
Protestor Eben Norton Horsford, of
Harvard university. The exercises
were held under the auspices of the
American Geographical society at the
tower erected near the junction of
Stony Brook with the Charles Eiver,
which marks the spot -where the re
mains of Norumbega are said to have
been discovered, ajad consisted of a
sketch of the researches of Professor
Horsford; an address by Judge Daly,
president of the society; a Swedish
folk song by Madam Zela; a poem by
Mr. "W. E. Clement; and a hymn cpm
posed by Miss Louise Manning Hodg
kins, and sung by a choir from Nor
umbega Hall, "Wellesley College.
At the opening of the exercises Pro
fessor Horsford made the following
anneuncement: "It i3 now nearly
live years since I discovered on the
banks of Charles river the site of Fort
Norumbega, occupied for a time by
the Bretons some four hundred years
ago, and many years earlier still built
and occupied as the scat of extensive
fisheries and a settlement by the
Northmen. It is nearly five years
since the discovery was the subject of
a communication which I had the
honor to adress to you, in your official
capacity, on the first of March, 18S5,
and which was published in the Octo
ber bulletin of the American Geog
raphical society of the same year.
"I have to-day the honor of announ
cing to you the discovery of Yiuland,
including the Landfall- of Leif Erik
son and the site of his houses. I have
also to announce to you the discovery
of the site of the ancient city of Nor
umbega.'' The following is the inscription on
the tablet let into the tewer:
"A.D. 1000. A.D. 1889. Nomm
bega. City: ceuntry: fert: liver.
Norumbega Nor mbega. Indian ut
terance of Norbega, the ancient of
Norvega, Norway; to which the re
gion Yinland was subject. City at
and near "Watertown. "Where remain
to-day docks, wharves, walls, dams,
basin. Country extending from
Bhode Island to the St Lawrence.
First seen by Bjarni Herjulfson, 935
A. D. Landfall of Leif Erikson on
Cape Cod, 1000 A. D. Norse canals,
dams, walls, pavements, forts terraced
places of assembly, remain to-day.
Fort at base of tower and region
about was occupied by the Breton
French in the 15th, lGth, and 17th
centuries. Biver the Charles dis
covered by Leif Erikson 1000 A. D.
Explored by Thorwald, Leif s brother,
1003 A. D. Colonized by Thorfinn
Kurlsefni 1007' A. D. First Bishop
Erik Gnupson 1121 A D. Industries
for 350 years. Masur-wood (burs),
fish, furs, agriculture. Latest Norse
ship returned to Iceland in 1347."
Prof. Horsford recounted narratives
of Yerrazano, Parmentier, and other
oxplorcrs. relating to the reported ex
istence of the remains of Norumbega
as somewhere between the site of
Gloucester and the headwaters of the
Charles. The name appeared on their
maps.
There are monuments of the pres
ence of the Northmen, said Prof. Hors
ford ou every square mile of the
basin of the Charles. As evidence
of :this he alluded to the canal, walled
on one side for a thousand feet along
the west side of Stony Brook, and to
the dry canal near Nowtonville.
There were also remains of canals,
ditches, deltas, boom dams, ponds,
fish traps, dwellings, walls, and am
phitheaters scattered all throughout
the basin of the river Charles.
Among the epigrams that illumin
ated Secretary Noble's instructive and
suggestive speech at the chamber of
commerce banquet, one was especially
felicitous and notable. Speaking of
the time when the Nicaragua canal
will connect the waters of the Gulf
with those of the Pacific, he said:
'The Mississippi will be the shore of
two oceans." That is a big concep
tion conveved in rerv few words.
Water in the Snake river has been
so low this season that settlers have
bitterly complained of the dust raised
by the salmon going up stream. They
threaten to ask for an appropriation
to sprinkle the river next year if the
nuisance is repeated.
In fourteen states an alien can vote
after simply declaring his intentions.
Those'states are Alabama, Arkansas,
Colorado, Florida, Indiana, Kansas,
Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Mis
souri, Nebraska, Oregon, Texas and
"Wisconsin.
Accokdixg to the 'American Cyclo
paedia" there are about thirty-eight
thousand different words in the
English language. The "Century
Dictionary' contains 200,000 words,
many of which are variants of others.
In the senate of 1848 there were
sixty members, of these only two are
living, the venerable, but still active,
vice president Hannibal Hamlin, and
Jefferson Davis of Mississippi
Connecticut has a wickedest town.

TKK QUESTION SETTLED.
This Is a faithful pic
ture of the establish
ment of Thomas Prico
& Son, at 521 Sacra
mento St, S. F. As tho
leading chemists of
tho -west, they were
asked to scttlo tho question as to what sarsa
parillas were in fact purely vegetable. Wo
present their report. " We liave made careful
chemical analyses of several well Jziovm brands
of sarsaparilla, and have found them alltcilh
Ihe single exception of Joy's to contain iodide of
potassium. As a result we are enabled to pro
nounce Joy's to be the only purely vegetable
sarsaparilla now on the inarlct, which has corns
under our observation." Modern medicine
ha3 proven that all ordinary face eruptions
are caused by indigestion and sluggixh circu
lation, which call for vegetable alteratives,
Instead of mineral blood purifiers like iodide
of potassium. Joy's Vegetable Sarsaparilla
Is the first to discard tho old notions and pro
ceed under tho modern theory. Its cures are
tho talk of the hour.
