Will It Be Lons- Skirts or Short Skirts?
What is Talked of for Fall Feminine Wear.
Are the skirts going to be long or
short? Ponderous question, and how
shall it be answered? The most contra
dictory reports come, from the 'seat of
fashion; sometimes comes the edict that
they must "be shorter than ever, and then
again we are told thai short trains with
front lengths to correspond are worn even
in the street. Bnt from this, heaven
forefend us; the recollection of those
dirt-accumulating, street-sweeping ap
pendages is too recent to be pleasant, and
we don't want them again, no matter
what imperious Madam Fashion has to
say about it. Yes, my good madam, your
edicts are generally absolute, but don't
proclaim such an one as this, for your
humble votaries will rebel, you may de
pend upon it.
To draw my own conclusions on this
interesting subject, the length of tho
skirt, I should say that it is generally
very greatly influenced by the size and
beauty of the wearer's feet, as I remem
ber that the first to introduce the fjisbion
of short skirts was one of tho "haut ton,"
who could boast of a pair of the very
prettiest feot that ever were seen.
Certainly short skirts do favor a pretty,
foot, whereas they bring an ugly foot in
to undesired prominence. I recall to
mind a stern and rigid Boston lady of
culture, who always insisted on wearing
her skirts up to tho ankle, exhibiting two
feet that did full justice to a pair of No.
G's. However, the length of skirt popular
just now, that which just escapes the
ground, is a length favorable to both
small and large feet, for a foot always
looks smaller when' it comes from be
neath a long dress, an effect which you
have probably noticed in a hand when it
comes from beneath a fall of lace. So
all are satisfied to have the skirt-length
stay just as it is.
What a pleasure it was to. see the ilat
heeled, broad-toed shoe superceded this
summer by tho dainty tie! Those broad
toed shoes are well enough for long
walks, constitutionals, as we call them,
but for the placid meandering that a
woman generally contents herself with,
the ties are just as comfortable, and a
great deal prettier. Since that exquisite
foreign exotic, five o'clock tea, has graft
ed itself upon our republican soil, and es
tablished itself as a charming form of
entertainment tho ultra touch of highest
fashion, the value of pretty shoes and
stockings as a means of charm, is being
rnoro and more appreciated and under
stood, and some xf these charmers are
ravishing in Leautv; costing as high as
$20 a pair.
Tho daintiest stockings come in silks,
and are very ornamental. Green, in all
shades, is popular, and green and black
stripes especially so. Some of the fanci
est designs have letters .embroidered on
them in shaded silks; for instance, an L
in blue silk on a black stocking; this of
course would bo chosen by a lady whoso
namo begins with L. The little pin
point patterns are very pretty, as aro also
tho diamond-shaped designs executed in
contrasted colors. Although- the black
stocking is still the onty wear for tho
street, stockings tho shade of the dress
are preferred for indoors.
S'f ho slippers are of many kinds; there
are tho elegantly finished patent leather
ties, with half high heels thnt aro always
popular, and those of ooze calf in vari
ous shades of tan and brown, with em
broidered toes, and low shoes, with im-
mense silver or paste buckles; these are
all to wear with white or very light
dresses.
Tho satin slippers are in every shade,
and can bo had to order to match any
dress. Those in red aro especially at
tractive; picture to yourself a black lace
tea-gown, relieved by red ribbons, and a
pair of scarlet silk" stockings emerging
from scarlet high-heeled shoes, braided
in black. Pretty, don't yon think so?

I "When P. D. Benham and I started the
present Arkansaiv Traveler we had, after
navins for the type, just money enoueh
to get out three issues; but as I had run
excuse me, walked so many papers with
out any money at all, I felt greatly en-
couragea. n waa some time oeiora we
began to put money in the bank indeed,
our business in that direction has never
enjoyed tl rush. There were times when
it was a strain to pay the printers, but
they didn't seem to feel it. They took
tho money as emotionlessly as if we had
found it in the road. For a long time
advertisers were slow in recognizing our
"unrivaled facilities." They were ex
tremely stupid. They didn't come around
and dispute any of our assertions. They
silently accepted our -statements, but
continued to neglect their opportunities.
We sent them the following circular:
"Gentlemen: The Arkansaw Traveler
now goes all over tlie world, and it is with
diflicnlty that we have kept it from going to
lien."
After this statement had been made,
advertisements began to move towards
us. Colonel Ben Simons advertised for a
strayed calf, and John V. Fillpot put in
an announcement to the effect that he
would not bo responsible for debts con
tracted by his wife. We sent tor Mrs.
