ASTORIA. OKEGON:
THURSDAY.
MAY 3, 18S8.
Is Sydney, Australia, according to
report, if you want to use the tele
blione, you must ring the person up
with whom you would communicate
and then take a cab and go and see
him. An answer by telephone is
never expected.
There is the usual surmise here
and presumably elsewhere as to who
will be candidates for the various of
fices. What in the world a man in
good health and able to otherwise
make a. living wants of an office is
one of the unexplained incidents of
our daily life.
It is proposed to preserve fish alive
by placing them in vessels partly
filled with water and hermetically
sealed. It is said that fish so con
fined have been found alive after
three weeks, without either air or
water having been changed, while
fish in an open jar died in forty-eight
hours. If the air in the vessel is com
pressed the lifo of tho fish is further
prolonged.
i .
There are in America over 4,000,
000 farms, large and Email. They
cover nearly 20,000,000 acres of im
proved land, and their total value is
something like 810,000,000,000. These
figures are not, of course, very com
prehensive. They simply convey the
idea of vastness of area and equal
vastness of importance. Tho esti
mated value of the yearly products of
these farms is between 82,000,000,000
and 83,000,000,000.
Fisn Crrr, Mich., is one of the odd
est towns in tho country, having no
existence except in the winter. It is
situated on Saginaw bay not on the
shores, but literally on the bay and
is a collection of board shanties built
upon the ice. This season it contained
1,000 houses. They aro tho huts of
the men who do the winter fishing for
pike, pickerel, lake trout and white
fish, and as soon as tho ico forni3 on
the bay their construction is begun.
A Connecticut man tells this story
of a remarkable exhibition of nerve by
a professional sneak-thief: "One day
he walked quietly into a bank, took
offhishatand coat, hung them on a
nail, put on an office coat that hung
there, nnd walked into the rear room
which contained the vaults. The di
rectors were holding n meeting, and
one sat in trtMt of a door blocking the
passage. The thief politely asked
him to move, and when tho obliging
director did so the man went through
the door, picked up two of tho largest
bags of gold in sight, coolly walked
out with them, and thief and gold
were seen no more there."
It is a strange feature in the Ger
man emperor's case that his life has
been twice endangered "by the lack of
mechanical skill on the part of his
medical attendants. At San Eemo he
was bleeding to death from an ill-ad'
justed, clumsy tube made for his
throat His second relapse at Berlin
grew out of the fact that the tubes
employed became inadequate, and.
until the same skillful artisan was
called that made instruments for him'
at San Eemo, he again drifted near
death. Now, with the new tubes of
the lightest known material, alumin
ium, he again has been able to get up
from bed, but it will bo noted that
larger tubes have been employed, and
the wound in the throat, instead of
healing, has increased in size. The
diseased portion drained by it goes
deeper and deeper, removing all pos
sibility of the hope of recoverv. The
quarrels among the the doctors in at
tendance have now beeome so great as
to create open scandal.
Is Consumption Incurable?
Bead the follewing: Mr. C. II. Morris,
Newark, Arlc, says:. "Was down with
Abscess of Lungs, and friends and phy
sicians pronounced me an Incurable
Consumptive. Began taking Dr. King's
New Discovery for Consumption, am
now on my third bottle, and able to
oversee the work on my farm. It Is the
finest medicine ever made."
Jesse Middlewart, Decatur, Ohio,
says: "Had it not been for Dr. King's
New Discovery for Consumptien I
would have died of Lung Troubles. Was
given up by doctors. Am now In best
of health." Try it. Sample bottles free

HOW IT IS DONE
In Sail Diego A City Enilt in a Year.
Ben Macready, after a brief visit to
his old home in this city, has returned
to his new home in San Diego. He
has every faith and confidence in the
latter as a money changing center
and n pleasant place to live. While
admitting that Fnget sound and
Washington territory have a thousand
points to offer against California's
one for snbstantial business invest
ments, he still thinks the climate,
fruit, etc., of the country, and the
dash and enterprise of its people
good enough for all practical pur
poses. "Married people are attracted
there from the east in throngs," he
saya. "'Many of them, charmed with
the climate, stay. In a short time
they feel the desire to be bnsy, and 60
they get in and spend money; under
take big enterprises, turn wastes of
land into gardens, plant railroads, de
velop Dig waterworks, and that sort
of thing. There can be no scarcity of
money where cthere is a constant re
newal of the supply of rich people, as
there will always bo in that conntrv
of resorts for eastern millionaires.
San Diego ha3 grown from a city of
9,000 people ono vear ago to one of
45,000 to-day."
"How was all this brought about?''
"By advertisine boominu. At first
they used the folders of tho railroads
running into California to point out
the glories of tho city to the traveler.
They had nothing in the world to of
fer but climate and fruit. They made
it a common point with other cities,
and had the tickets sold in the east
all read "To San Diego," thus en
abling the traveler to come there
whether he started for that point or
not. Then they flooded the east with
printed circulars, etc., and finally
they engaged a band of the finest mu
sicians, secured in different parts of
the country, and contracted with
them for a year for 810.000, uniformed
them magmncently and sent them all
over the country, advertising San
Diego. With them was kept a oar
load of fruit, which, with circulars,
were distributed gratuitously throngh
tho crowds at each stopping place.
The result was a tremendous immi
gration. That is the way they do
things down there." Seattle Post-
Intelligencer.
A Warning.
The modes of death's approach are
various, and statistics show conclu
sively that more- persons die from dis
eases of the Throat and Lungs than
any other. It is probable that every
one, without exception, receives vast
numbers of Tubercle Germs into the
system and where these germs fall
upon suitable soil they start into life
and develop, at first slowly and is
shown by a slight tickling sensation
in the throat and if allowed to con
tinue their ravages they extend to the
lungs producing Consumption and to
the head, causing Catarrh. Now all
this 13 dangerous and if allowed to
proceed will in time cause death. At
tho onset you must act with prompt
ness; allowing a cold to go withont
your attention is dangerous and may
lose you your life. As soon as you
feel that something is wrong with
your Throat, Lungs or Nostrils, ob
tain a bottle of Boschee's German
Syrnp. It will give you immediate
relief.
