The transfer of the Hoosac tunnel
by the state of Masachnsetts to the
Fitchburg road may be considered a
holes ale transaction.
The fine weather has started work
in the logging camps, and general ac
tivity has taken the place of the
former dullness in that department.
Messrs. Brain & Elbon yesterday
leased from H. Oliverson, Young's
river falls for ten years, and will im
mediately begin the construction of a
pulp mill.
The Scandinavian Benevolent so
ciety, which started a short time ago
with forty members, has now about
one hundred on the roll, and is grow
ing fast in numbers.
The funeral of the late Gus. Matt-
son, drowned at Clatsop spit last Fri
day, was largely attended Sunday
morning. The name oi the boat
puller was Felix Mattson. His body
has not yet been recovered.
Baird's mammoth minstrels will be
here on the 31st .inst., and will
give one of their renowned perform
ances at Ross' opera house. The sale
of reserved seats will begin at the
New York Novelty Store on the 26th
inst They will have a big house.
The Portland Rowing Association
invite all amateur oarsmen on this
coast to take part in their annual re
gatta. They .solicit correspondence
from all clubs asking for their views
as to the best times for all to partici
pate. The races will be rowed under
the rules of the National Association
of Amateur Oarsmen.
For some time F. Campbell has
been making life a burden to ABrun
gardt by thieatening to bruise and
beat him on sight. Last Sunday
night he found Brungardt and bat
tered him plenty for alleged canse.
The second act in the drama was
played yesterday before Justice Cleve
land, costing Campbell 823.
It is thought a new deep sea fish
ing scheme will shortly be organized
and a sail schooner put on to fish
outside the bar and along the coast.
It does seem as though the business
could be made to pay. There is a
constant demand for such fish as are
in plenty outside and with, a perma
nent depot at Portland it is' probable
all that was caught could be disposed
of here and there.
Mention was made a few weeks ago
of a fine trophy in the shape of a $50
badge marked "High boat," "87," and
bought by the Fisherman's Packing
Co. Another equally fine was seen
yesterday. It is for the White Star
Packing Co., is made up of a large,
white enameled dial, in the form of a
star, surrounded by a golden scroll
and the seal of the company on a
solid gold medal, and above a salmon
in gold, the whole forming a mdal
worth having.
The schooner Venture, which left
about ten days ago for tho sealing
grounds, met some reverses when
about 400 miles west of here and nut
back, anchoring in Shoalwater bay
last Saturday. They had rough
weather all the way, when their main
boom broke and other repairs were
made necessary, they determined to
go back and make a fresh start. Al.
Harris and Al. McLean go over this
morning and will go with her, start
ing to-morrow .or Thursday for the
far-off seal seas.
Capt. Al. Harris, late chief of the
life saving station at Cape Hancock,
received a present yesterday of which
any man might well be proud. It is
a binocular telescope, handsomely
fitted and suitably engraved, the in
scription setting forth that it was
S resented to him by A. McLean, J.
L Efp, J. Q. Church, F. C. Marden,
A. Brown, O. D. Stuart, Wm. Fry, W.
H. Helmken, surfmen and members
of the life crew with whioh Capt.
Harris was so long and creditably
connected. - The glass cost $43, and
is highly valued by its owner by rea
son ot tho kindly feelings that
prompted the gift.
The examination for public school
teachers1 certificates begins at coun
ty superintendent Page's office at
noon to-morrow. This is the first ex
amination under the new law. There
will be three grades of certificates,
first, second and third. A first grade
certificate entitles one to teach for a
period of two years in any of the pub
lic sohopls of the state; second grade,
a term of one year; third grader for
six months. In obtaining certifi
cates, the following percentages are
necessary: First grade, 90 per cent;
second, 80 per cent; third, 70 per
cent -All examinations must be pub
lic, and no one under eighteen years
ot age will be granted a certificate.

PROBABLE TROUBLE AT HAMILTON.
Niagara FALLS,May 23. Mr.O'Bri-
en arose this morning so weak as to j
be almost unable to stand. He, how
ever, insisted on leaving for Hamilton
by the noon train. Toronto is not
more than forty miles from Hamilton,
and it is understood to-day that bod
ies of Orangemen intend to make de
scent from the larger cities upon
Hamilton and join with the local
Orangemen in making an attack on
O'Brien's life. The Nationalists will
be organized this time, and Mr.
O'Brien approves tho idea that
they should be and that outside
aid should be sent Hamiltqp, which
will now probably be done by his
friends in Buffalo and other Irish
centers.

Portland, Or., May 23. The Co
lumbia River Navigation Company
was organized here to-day with O. S.
Savage, of The" Dalles, Henry Coe,
of Hood River, and Frank T. Dodge,
of Portland, incorporators. The pur
pose is to establish an opposition line
through from Tho Dalles. A new
boat is to be built at Hood River, the
keel of which has already been laid.
The company will purchase a boat
here for the lower river. A portage
at the Cascades will be made by
teams. The intention of the com
pany is to open the new line just as
soon as possible.
FIRES AND DROUGHT IN MICHIGAN.
Detroit, May 23. Specials to the
Journal from the upper peninsula
report forest fires still raging. From
all parts of the "peninsula come re
ports of continued drought. Danger
to many towns is as imminent as at
any previous time. At the latest,
Ironwood was threatened, but the
wires are down and no news has
been received since last night. Un
less heavy rain come3 soon much
damage is feared near Negannee.

The steamship Mexico arrived in
Esquimau, B. C, on the 12th. It is
understood, says the Port Townsend
correspondent Portland Journal of
Commerce, that the Jfexico was re
leased from her bed of rocks by dis
charging 300 tons of coal from the
forward part of the vessel, thus tip
ping her stern. Tho rocks on which
she was resting were then blasted,
and as fast as they were removed was
were put in their place, and she was
thus launched and steamed to De
parture bay and beached. Tho in
jured parts were replaced by hoTvy
planking, and when the work is done
she will proceed to San Francisco for
repairs.

the Grand Army of the Republic
lodge of this place will give a grand
ball at Ilwaco hall. All old soldier
and sailors cordially invited. In

Capt Alex McLean, of the sloop
Venture, that sailed not long ago
from Astoria for tho fur sealing
grounds of Alaska, arrived in town
to-day with one ot tho crow, overland
mostly, from Sunshine, Shoalwater
bay, where the sloop was being re
paired somewhat. It appears they
had several clays of severe weather
some 400 miles out, were reefed down
four days and hove to half of that
time. The cook was very sick. Al.
Carruthers became so dangerously ill
it was deemed necessary to put into
Shoalwater bay and put him ashore at
Oysterville, his home. The Captain
came over to procure two substitutes
and will then make another start It
is said that the crew and part owners
in this enterprise were dissatisfied
with the manner the captain managed
things.
Frances Sweeney, wife of Lebarre
Petit, died last Thursday at Chinook
and was buried on Saturday.
