A TEUE INCIDENT.
A Pointed Illustration of What Oan Be
Accomplished With Rye Dollars.
Even a small amount of money
in constant circulation may cancel
many obligations, or serve to give
honest employ mentto willing work
men. What helps one man is
likely to help another; and he who
pays his debts does more towards
liquidating the debts ot other men
than ho will be likely to imagine.
,The following incident, founded
on a real occurence, illustrates our
meaning.
A. owed fifteen- dollars to B.
B. owed twenty dollars to C.
C. owed fifteen dollars to D.
D. owed thirty dollars to E.
E. owed twelve dollars and fifty
cents to F.
F. owed ten dollars to A.
All o the persons that these ini
tials represent were seated at the
same table.
A.,havinga five-dollar note hand
ed it to B., remarking that it paid
five dollars of the fifteen (hollars he
owed B.
B. passed the note to C, with
the remark that it paid five dollars
of the twent3' dollars which he
owed.
(X passed it to D., and paid with
it five dollars of the fifteen dollars
which he owed D.
D. banded it to E., in part pay
merit of the thirty dollars he owed
Tiim.
E. gave it to F.; to apply on ac
count of the -twelve dollars arid
fifty cents due. him.
F. passed it back to A., saying:
"This pays half of (he amount I
owe you."
A. again passed it to B., saj'ing:
"1 now only owe you five dollars."
B. passed it again to C, with
the remark: "This reduces my
indebtedness.? to vou to ten dol
lars."
0. again paid it to D., reducing
his indebtedness to five dollars.
D. paid it over to E., saying: "I
now owe you twenty dollars."
E." handed it again to F., saying:
"This reduces my indebtedness to
j'ou to two dollars and fifty cents."
Again F. handed the.note to A.,
saying: "Now I don't owe you
anything."
A. passed it immediately to B..
thus canceling the balance of h's
indebtedness.
B. handed it to C, reducing h.s
indebtedness to five dollars.
C. canceled tho balance of his
debt to D. by handing tho note to
him. " w
D. paid it again to E., saying:
"I now owe you fifteen dollars."
Then E. remarked to F.: "If you
will give me two dollars and fifty
cents this will settle my indebt
edness to you."
F. took two dollars and fifty
cents from his pocket, handed it
to E., and returned the five-dollar
note to his pocket, and thus the
spell was broken, the single five-
dojlarxnoto having paid eighty-two
dollar&and fifty cents,, and can
celed"A.s debt to B., C.'s debt to
D., E.'s debt to F., and F.'s debt
to A., and at the same time hav
ing reduced Bj's debt to C. from
twenty dollars to five, dollars, and
D.'s debt to E. from thirty dollars
to fifteen dollars.
In Town and Hamlet
The seeds of intermittent and bilious remi
tent fever germinate and bear evil fruit. No
community has' altogether escaped It. In
.populous wards of large cities bad sewage
causes it, and in their suburbs stagnant
pools in sunken lots brtfed It. There is at
once a remedy and a means of prevention.
Its name is Ilostetter's' Stomach Bitters,
which is, -without perad venture, the most
potient antidote in existence to the ma
larial virus. ifortlfled with this lucompara
ble, saving specific, miasmatic Influences
may be encountered with absolute Im
punity. Disorders of the stomach, liver and
bowels, begotten by mlasm-tainted water or
any other cause, succumb to the beneficent
corrective named, and rheumatic, kidney
and bladd er troubles aro surely removable
by Its use when it is given a persistent trial.
Hypoorisy and cunning travel
together, and they cannot get very
far separately.

Senator Mitchell'B Opinion.
New York, April 8. Senator
Mitchell, of Oregon,- commented
to-day on the action of the inter
state commission in this wise:
"The action of the commissioners
in suspending the operation of the
fourth section as regarding the
southern railroads was entirely il
legal. They have no more right
to do it than I would have. The
law provides what the commission
may do where the conditions of a
long and short haul are similar.
The southern" roads put in a plea
that competition with ocean water
rates necessitated certain rates for
long hauls, which would bo lower
in proportion than short haul rates
in their territory. This is not
a case of similar' conditions but
dissimilar ones, and tho commis
sion went entirely beyond its pow
er in making the suspension.
Eeduced Preight Bates on Lumber.
Yesterday the 0. R. & N. com
pany and the Union Pacific fixed
a rate of 5o cents per hundred on
lumber from Portland to Denver,
arid from Portland to Omaha,
Kansas City, Council BlufFs, St.
Joseph and other Missouri river
points. This is a reduction of 9
cents a hundred -to Denver, and 5
cents to the Missouri river, from
last year's rates. The rate from
Chicago to Denver is the same as
from Portland, and this wjll place
our lumber men on an equal foot
ing with the great lumber markets
of the world. The new rates will
be permanent, at least for this sea
son, and all the saw mills in the
state will no doubt find a ready
market for their entire output.

Prohibition in Michigan.
Detkoit, mApril 8. From all
reports - received tile J&vcnina
Jounal now figures the majority
against prohibition at 3,G6.
More complete returns in most
places may cut down the prohibi
tion vote. This (Yayne), county
gives a majority against the
amendment of 22,344, being an
increase of several hundred over
former reports. There is now no
doubt that prohibition has been
dffoated.

A Dyspeptic.
" I have been suffering
forover 4wo years with
Dyspepsia. For the last
year I could not take a drink
of cold waiter nor eat any
meat without vomiting it up.
My life was a misery. I had
had recommended Simmons

I am now taking the second
bottle, and the fact is that
words cannot express the
relief I feel. My appetite
is very good, and I digest
everything thoroughly. I
sleep well now, and I used to
be very restless. I am flesh

I write this in hopes of bene
