ASTOKIA, OREGON:
SUNDAY JANUARY 18, 1685
BiiAiKE is now said to bo figuring
to go back to the senate from Maine.
It is reported that the czar -will as
sume the additional title of emperor
of central Asia, and that there -will
be a grand coronation ceremony at
Samarcand.
The depression of the ship building
interest in Great Britain is exempli
fied by the fact that there was a de
crease of 450,000 tons in the net
tonnage last year compared with
.1883. " .
In the house of representatives
last Friday, on motion of Cobb, the
hpuse refused to concur in the Asto
ria land grant forfeiture bill as pass
cdby the senate. This delays but
docs not defeat the final forfeiture of
the grant.
The latest rumor regarding General
Grant is that he is suffering from a
swelling of tho tongue that threatens
to develop into a cancer. It will be
remembered that tho late Senator
Hill of Georgia suffered from this
terrible malady.
' Caxapxax millers are petitioning
the dominion government to raise
the duty on American flour from
fifty cents to one dollar per barrel.
Over 250,000 barrels were imported
from tho "Dinted States last year by
the maritime provinces.
In case Dakota i3 not admitted to
the Union some of tho noisiest poli
ticians up there threaten to set up a
northwestern republic of their own.
The same kind of people talked of a
Pacific republic in 1850 when Califor
nia was kept out of tho Union on a
sectional issue.
It is generally understood in Lon
don that the heir presumptive to tho
throne will be made a duke, probably
Duke of Kent, reviving the title of
the queen's father. Tho temperance
press makes an ado because the queen
gave her royal grandson on obtaining
his majority a silver punch bowL
Congressman Taylob comes to the
relief of the postmasters by showing
that, as there are about 50,000 post
offices to fill, and about fifteen appli
cants for each, it will be a physical
impossibility for the new president
to attend to 750,000 claimants, and
that consequently he will bo obliged
to let the terms of postmasters expire,
and thus divide the burden over sov
eral years.
The rival cities of St. Paul and
Minneapolis show a growth, as repre
sented by building operations, almost
exactly equal for the past season. St.
Paul has put up 1,920 residences and
4C3 other buildings, and Minneapolis
1,900 residences and 381 other build
ings. The cost of all in St Paul was
$7,2GG,000, and in the other city $7,
621,000. The total of both places
was 4.724 buildings, at a cost of $14,
883,000 enough to make a very rep
utable town.
A Washington special of the JGlli
saj-s it appears to be tbc intention of
some members of congress to barrass
tbe president with the bill for the re
tirement of Grant. The bilL "which
passed the senate does not contain
the name of any one, but it is under
stood the house will lay this bill
aside, and pnss a bill containg
Grant's name, which passed the sen
ate last session. It this bill is passed
the president will be compelled to
veto, it on the same ground as tho
Fitz John Porter bill. General Slo
cum, in an interview, said he would
call up the senate bill to retire Grant
on tho first opportunity, and push it
through the house. Tho president
would then be compelled to retract
his objections to tho Porter bill, or
veto the Grant bill.
The prospects of a proposed route
from the Canadian northwest to Eu
rope via Hudson's bay are not consid
ered encouraging, A diary for August
shows that ice prevailed in tho straits
for nineteen days out of the thirty
onej and that "snow-storms prevailed
on five other daj's. As the straits
ought to be open during August, the
outlook for the other months cannot
be bright. -J. W. Klatze, a Dominion
government official, Tvho was sent to
inquire into the feasibility of con
structing a railway from Winnepeg
to Hudson's bay, has returned to Ot
tawa. He does not -speak favorably
of the ultimate success of the under
taking, and thinks if it is ever ac
complished, it will be at a price which
few capitalists will care to pay. Put
the difficulties of tho navigation of
the straits and the almost insurmount
able barriers in the way of construct
ing a railway to the bay together, the
.outlook for northwest settlers having
direct communication by this route
with Europe is not at all hopeful.
It is a somewhat remarkable fact,
says the London World, that the
cheapest way to send a certain class
of goods from Liverpool to London
is via New York. This arises from
the keen competition between out
ward-bound Atlantic steamers for
profitable dead weight The other
day about onp thousand tons of
rough freight was offered for car
riage to London, no time being spec
ified. The London linos tendered at
10s a ton, butoneof the Atlantic firms
undertook to deliver it for 03 a ton,
and the offer was accepted.
There are some funny bills being
introduced in the legislature. Hirsch,
of Multnomah, has introduced a bill
in the senate "reducing the fees
of school clerks." The average
I school clerk doesn't get enough out
of the office to pay for the cussing he
gets from those he fails to satisfy.
Another bill is similar in import to a
law that we have hero in Astoria; it
gives anyone a right to carry a re
volver on payment of alicense of $2.50
a year. Nothing is said about char
actor, calling, exigency or circum
stance of any kind. The $2.50 is
enough and constitutes sufficient cre
dentials. The United States exhibit at tho
New Orleans exposition is very back
ward. An appropriation of $300,000
was made to bring goods from de
partments in Washington and put
them on exhibition. There being no
lack of money, and tho display not
yet being in order, some explanation
ought to be given. One of the most
important branches of the govern
ment got only $15,000 of the $300,000.
Somebody will bo poking around one
of these days to know how tho $300,
000 was expended. Ihe display of
portraits of some of the government
officials, particularly in the state de
partment, shows perhaps one of the
ways the money has gone. What
place the portraits of government
officials have in an exposition of tho
industries of tho country is not to bo
determined, unless they come in un
der tho head of products.
In a recent sermon Beecher thus
paints tho strong contrast between
tho Jesus of eighteen centuries ago
and of tho present day: "Then men
were aBhamed of him. Well, why
might they not be? Bear in mind
that ho was a peasant, a carpenter.
and in Galilee; and Galilee was
what the Five Points used to bo in
New York.
Some of them had their doors made
by him; ho put in window sashes for
them; he had made cradles and cribs
for them. And you may depend up
on it his joints fitted and he never
covered bad jobs with putty. But.
after all, he was only a carpenter, and
when he began to teach in tho syna
gogue on tho Sabbath thoy were of
fended at him. They were not going
to take such a man for their ideal.
Now ho is the world's hero. Ho is
the center of architecture, of paint
ing, of sculptured art He is tho life
of embellishment itself, and pleasuro
frescoes him in every shape, and all
worldly devices are around about him
to celebrate theboauty and lordliness
of the Galilean peasant Pearls and
diamonds framo crosses which palpi
tate on the bosoms of beauty.
In his day the cross was an instru
ment of torture, the lowest and bas
est; now, higher than the sword, tho
throne, the crown. Tho morning
sun kisses it on tho cathedral spire,
and farewell light glitters from it aB
tho sun departs."
