C?J She gaitjf gtftoratt. ASTORIA, OREGON: SATURDAY .AUGUST 9, 1881 "SPECIAL" AND "IMPORTANT." One of the tilings that is not given to the ordinary mind to understand is how the associated press can so dis tort the meaning o the word "news' as to justify the sendingof the columns of bosh that are daily telegraphed all over the country. Every day comes the "news" that the honorable Smith has said that he would base his hopes of future existence on the belief that Blaine -would be elected; in the same breath comes a dispatch marked "important," and "special," in which the honorable Brown is willing to have any one wager his sanguin ary intestines that Cleveland will be elected. Supposing that the honorable Smith or the equally honorable Brown do think so! What of it? Who cares? They have a right to their opinion, but no one attaches any more importance to it than to the opin ion of the grocer across the street or the milkman around the corner. When election comes we'll all ex press an opinion and have our little individual say, but it is ridiculous to read the rot that is telegraphed across the continent regarding what Smith or Brown happen to think. EXTREMES MEET. Shivering on a throne, pallid in his palace, quaking on parade such is the picture we have of the terrible White Czar. Lord over the lives of others, he is trembling for his own. He is a strong, muscular man with force in his face and not too much thought behind it to give it the look or disciplined power. He seems capable of destroying men to save himself, but whom to destroy? When he moves, a skirmish line of spies precedes him. They search, they scan, they glare. They fill prisons and they drive thousands whom the prisons will not hold before them If they could but lay their hands on the plotters there would be an end But who are the plotters? They look in each other's faces; they doubt each other. They tap the ground and find a mine under a palace. The While Czar doubts them alL An army must be on the march when he takes a step. The death in life of Siberian exile is no whit worse than the triumphal march of the terrible Czar. THE CANVASS SHIRT. The Blaine managers are true to their programme of aggressiveness, and talk now of breaking the solid south on the tariff issue. The battle is not to be fought out on shot-guns, but cotton spindles. It is not to be the bloody shirt in this canvass, but the brand-new shirt Well, this is a novelty. It is extremely doubtful that it will avail in such a state as Mis sissippi, where the rule has been to keep the immense negro vote from the polls at all hazards; but in Lousiana it may have some force. The Cleveland managers are up and stirring. They cannot afford to lose an electoral vote south of Mason and Dixon's line. Any republican com bination with a force of southern whites large enough to insist on the polling of the negroes' ballots would petrify the chances of the Keform Governor. FLAT ASA FLOUNDER. Aiiii kinds of human curiosities are now being brought before the public with a lavishness hitherto unknown, even in this liberal age. The latest thing in the freak line is an Ohio man who can be flattened out like a pan cake and rolled up like a carpet. Had he made his appearance before the conventions met in Chicago he might have been chosen as a candidate for the presidency. A man possessed of such a peculiar physique would cre ate a great sensation in this country. If his constituents at a distance wished to gaze upon him ft would be an easy matter to flatten him out, roll him up and ship him by express C. O. D. In this condition he would be just right for pasting on banners bearing his name. The great objec tion to such a- display is -hat he would be twice as large as life and only half as natural. There is a general "kiok" east of the mountains regarding the discrim inative freight tariff adopted by the N.P. E. E. Co. "Farmer," writing to the Lincoln Leader, says: "The freight on a carload of .nails from Pittsburg to Spokane is the same as to Portland and back to Spokane. Portland is nearly or quite 400 miles west of Spokane. A carload of fur niture from Chicago to Spokane is $920; the same carload to Portland is only $600, although taken 400 miles farther. Take wagons, it costs the same to stop a carload at Spokane as it does to ship through to Port land and back again, one at a lime." In Germany tests have been made in the use of dynamite for pile-driving, with promising results. An iron plate five inches thick was placed upon the top of the pile, and upon it a pound and a half charge of dyna mite was exploded by electricity. It was driven into the mud as far as it would haveljeen by a weight of 3,259 pounds falling upon it five times from height of ten -feet. A ma- down at Washington colony, says the Fresno (Cala.) Democrat, having a band of seventy-five turkeys has dropped on the .novel idea of hir inghis flock out by the day to catch grasshoppers, instead of selling them, and he is now doing a lively business; his birds are in constant demand. He charges five dollars a day for the use of the flock, the employer furnishing the necessary herders. It is esti mated that each turkey that is active, alert and has an eye to business, is good for at least a quart of 'hoppers a day. Pious inhabitants of Toulon pass in procession through the streets to the number of fifty thousand, pray ing to God to stay the ravages of the cholera. It is a most commendable idea, and if strongly supplemented by a determined cleaning of the dirty streets and Binks of filth cannot fail to be a sanitary success. Sugar .is selling at two cents a pound in Havana and three cents in Glasgow. Gen. Grant gets $10,000 for writing twenty articles for the Century maga zine. NEW TO-BAY. PACIFIC MARKET.
