Blonde nair.
?Xhe hair census has never been
taken, neither have the statistics of
the shades aud colors o tho hirsute
appendages ever been definitely
ascertained,' said a prominent dealer
in hair goods on State street whom
the Daily News emissary had ap
plied to for verification of an item in
an eastern paper io the effect that
real blondo hair was disappearing
gradually in this country. "There
fore,'' the dealer continued, "it is
difficult to arrive at exact results.
Yet, generally speaking, it is safe to
say that -while this side the Iiocky
Mountains the brunettes are more
and more predominating, and es
pecially in the Atlantic states, on the
Pacific slope and all over the far
northwest the blondes are increasing
in numbers: not alone in numbers?
but also in proportion to the -vrtiole
population. Strange, isn't it?"
"What do you suppose is the
cause of this phenomenon?'
"Climate. It must be that, because
we can see the difference alreadv n
the second generation. Dark-haired
parents will have fair-haired children
if they went to the far "West before
their birth. Thus it is a fact that the
finest native American blonde hair ii
grown in Oregon, Nevada, Nebraska, ,
Washington Territory, and t Here
abouts." "How does a head of hairof Ameri
can raising compare in value and tex
ture with tho European article?"
"In texture it is mostly finer, but
as to weight and profusencss we can
not compare with tho Europeans.
That applies to both men and women.
It is comparatively seldom that one
finds a plenty of hair, long and
strong, on any American head of full
growth."
"What is the reason for it?'' ,
"Our mode of living: that at least,
more than anything else I presume,
thongh the dry air on this continent.
not conducive to the growth of hair,
may have something to do with it.
Our people live faster, spend their
vital forces quicker, think more anil
act more, are more energetically bant
on winning a good place in life's race
than is the case with the people across
the water. And, you know, it is a
physiological factthat those nations
who think and fret least have -the
largest amount of hair on their
heads." Chicago News.
Fishins; for Sharks.
Nantucket letter to Troy Tinas:
One feels grand after he has pulled
up a Nantucket shark weighing 300
or 400 pounds. If you are subject to
sea-sickness it is useless to attempt
sharking, which is a severe test of the
strength of a man's stomach. It is
always rough on the sharking
grounds, and as tho boat is anchored
the force of tho swell is more visibly
felt. The monster hook is baited
with bluefish and sunk to within
three or four feet of the bottom of tho
ocean. When a shark takes the bait
it is policy to let him have it a litte
while before pulling in. As the lino
is drawn in tho strain on the arms
becomes more severe the ncaror tho
shark gets to the surface. Often
times the tinited efforts of three men
are required to pull up one of these
monsters. When tho shark finds
his head above water he is frantic in
his efforts to get away. He slashes
his tail in his f nry, almost swamping
the boat, and stirring the salt water
into a seething foam. A few well-directed
blows from a club and the
shark gives up the ghost.
