m iMBfii he gailg stolm ASTORIA, OREGON: SATURDAY. .JUNE 23. 1R84 Blaise is a member of the Con gregational church and Logan is a Methodist Thebe are now four presidnetial pickets in the field, with a certainty of two and a possibility of three more. The highest tenement house in New York is fifteen stories high, and measures 200 feet from the tower to the ground. It will accommodate thirty-eight families. Wisconsin's dairy products, the largest of any state in the Union amounted last year to $19,500,000. There are in the state 1,000 creamer ies and cheese factories, and 500,000 cows. Theke are about 300 men engaged in lulling alligators in south Florida. The hide and teeth of the 'gator are what are wanted. The year s busi ness will bring to that section nearly $50,000. m Boston is lying awake o' nights over a fantastically horrifying rumor that Mr. Blaine has threatened to appoint a colored man collector of the port there as soon as he becomes president Three stages in the industrial inter ests of the country are shown in the following figures: In 1831 the xalue of the cotton mills in the United States was $i0,009,000; in 1870 it was $141,000,000, and in 1880, $208,225,000. Blaine began his political career by being elected to the Maine legislature in 1858. In 1860 he was re-elected, and made speaker. Two years later he was elected to congress, and the people of his district kept him there continuously for fourteen years, dur ing which period he was three times chosen speaker, receiving the nomi nation each time by acclamation; and then he was appointed senator, and subsequently elected to the place both for the short and long term by ' the unanimous vote of all the Bepub lican members of the Maine legisla ture. The English newspapers state that General Gordon's friends keep him supplied with newspapers, sending them through to Khartoum by special messengers. As not a word has been heard from General Gordon for some weeks, the report is prob ably a canard, but even if it were true, it is somewhat difficult to see what use he could make of the pa pers after he got them. It is true that the Mahdi's followers might be dispersed by having the editorials of the London journals read to them, but as Gordon is a soldier, and not an elocutionist, this means of routing the enemy will probably not occur to him in time to make it effective. The Mormon leaders have hung a pretty thick veil between themselves and the outside world, but occasion ally there is a rent in it and through the rent we catch a glimpse of what goes on within. The incident record ed as lately occurring in Utah, for instance, of the attempt of the first wife to commit suicide by throwing herself in front of a street car, upon the discover' that her husband had brought home wife number two, is but an indication of the awful misery that must pervade most Mormon homes. Women are not easily driven to suicide, in fact they are better able to endure the ills of life than men, but a sudden burden like this laid on even strong shoulders will break them down before they can accom modate themselves to the load. The Mormons tell us that women like the peculiar institution, but such inci dents as these do not savor much of an ardent support A VEP.Y striking idea of the growth of the country is to be derived from a glance at the increase of the number of votes cast in presidential elections. In the great Harrison campaign of 1840 the whole vote was little over 2,400.000, while in 1880 it was 9,210, 970, or nearly four times as great The combined vote of New York, Pennsylvania and Indiana is now larger than the total vote of all the states in 1840; and New York alone casts very nearly as many votes as ' were cast by the whole country in 1828. Another remarkable fact is' that as the votes iucrease the margin of difference between the parties grows narrower. Polk, Taylor, Bu chanan, Lincoln, Hayes and Garfield were all elected by a plurality instead of a majority of the aggregate popu lar vote; and in the case of -the lattbr the plurality by which ho won was only 7,000 in a total vote of nearly 9,000,000.
