XEAT, CHEAP AXD QUICK. BY
GEORGE IiOVETTt
Jlaln Street, opposite K. Loeb's.
SltSpbnildins;.
Sliiubnildintr in some ot its chief
characteristics is a very different art
from what it was only a iew years
aeo. The substitution, first, of iron
Sot wood, and, second, steel for both
wood and iron, will soon have euected
an entire revolution. Canada, next
tfler Afaine, was the stronghold oi
wooden shipbuilding, but a feeling
ooruenng oil consternation nas ucuu
caused in the Dominion by the an
nouncement that a firm who for many
ears have been among the largost
owners of sailing ships in America,
building most of their vessels in St.
.John and vicmilv, have inst closed a
contract in England for a sailing ship
of 1500 tons, to be built of iron.
"Wooden shipbuilding in Canada for
several years has been a declining in
dustry and tins last movement is re
garded as a presage of its wel: nigh
tinal extinction. The so-ctuled '.soft
wood" ships ot the Canadian prov
inces were the cheaiiest that could be
built, it being possible to put alloat
in New Brunswick or Xova Scotia a
vessel of this description fnlly equal
in appearance to one built iu IiTainn
and at a cost of several dollars less
per ton. If, under such favoring con
ditions wood cannot compete with iron
or steel, Canada has bnt one alterna
tive, if she would maintain her shm-
ards, of seeking materials amon
the products ot the mine rather than
of the forest. Iu this new departure
builders m the United btates have al
ready got the start, and by a long dis
tanee. On the Delaware river, con-
enient to the iron and conl mines ot
Pennsylvania, no less than lifty-six
vessels have been constructed during
the present vear, five of them wholly
of steel, and the indications are still
more promising for the year IS1. it
is claimed that the progress made in
the Delaware vards smce January 1st
is equal to the entire Inismet done
m the same establishments m the
whole of 18S2.
