w ?Ixe 33nife slaxXntu ASTORIA, OREGON: THURSDAY APRIL 3, 18S3 Railroad Rumors. The bustle ai.d stir tbat marks this season's operations give rise to countless speculations and enter prises, some tangible and likely, others vague and indeterminate. Just at present the air is filled with rumors concerning railroads. If half what is said comes to pass, Astoria will have more railroads than she can dispose of. It may be as well to briefly state that no railroad will come to Astoria this season. It is within the limits of probability that work will be be gun next season. This may be in opposition to general belief, but it is the fact nevertheless. The O. & G. seems the most lively; its stockholders hold a meeting next Tuesday in Portland where sup plemental articles of incorporation will bo submitted, and no doubt adopted, such supplementary pro visions looking with other things to the building 'of a road from Forest Grove to Astori a. This is done for effect, and to show con gress that they really want to pre vent the forfeiture of the Astoria land grant by complying with the original provisions of the condi tional grant. The O. & C. has been leased by the Oregon and Transcontinental, and no part of the present programme of that corporation contemplates the build ing of the road. Then comes the Kalama branch from Portland; that will be built to the stated point, but no farther down the Golumbia this season. The contemplated transfer of all the O. R.'& N. Co's interests to the Northern Pacific R. R. Co., to be made this season is sufficient evidence of that. The Oregon Short Lint, accord ing to Sidney Dillon "will go to tidewater." There is no intentien to stop at Baker City and the recent agreement with the O. R. & N. Co., does not prevent extend ing the road; there are now parties of survevors on Snake and Burnt rivers, and this force will be aug mented as the season advances. Coming nearer home there is talk of the revival of local railroad interest, and making such arrange ments as will insure the building of a railroad to Astoria; this has ..assumed taugible form and will be productive of results in the near future. It is not deemed best to give undue publicity to plans ta present. Senatei: Vest arrived in St. Louis last Tuesday, on his way home to Kansas City. In an interview he said the next presi dent certainly would be a Demo crat. He believed McDonald, of In diana, the most available man. He is popular in his own state, and to Vest's surprise, is strong in the eastern states. In regard to Tilden's probable candidacy he said: "Tilden is a strong man and would make a good candidate if his health would permit. I understand his health is much im proved at present. I am inclined to think the race will be " between Arthur and McDonald. Arthur is working for-the next nomination. It is a mistake that he and Conk line have fallen out. Logan may give Arthur trouble." FOR GRAY'S HARBOR. The I. S. ft. Cos Steamer GEN. MILES - "Will leave Astoria for Cray's Harbor, on Fritlay, April Oils. FffiST GRAND SALE! GRAND OPENING Tin: St. Louis Globe Democrat iays that there is :i significance in tho present tour of President Diaz through the United States which has not hitherto been made public. International courtesies and im provement of commercial relations are well enough, but it is not believ ed the hospitality and enthusiasm have an influence prompting it all. Diaz is in the hands of a syndicate of Ameiicans interested in Mexi can railroad development. His present position in Mexico makes him extremely valuable, and their plans contemplate thoy will be still more available in the future. After his return to Mexico he is expected to be still more widely recognized than ever as the lead ing man of that Republic. His re-election to the presidency is the object the syndicate have in view, and then their hopes of controlling the valuable conces sions Mexico has bestowed on railroad companies "will be fulfilled. How lar Diaz is a passive instru ment of his party, and how far he enters actively into the grand plan of controlling the politics and railroads of Mexico, it is impossi ble to tell, but enough has been developed during tho sta' of the general and companions in St. Louis to show something of the organization. As the matter now istands, the alliance is a powerful one, but if the plan of re-electing Diaz to the presidency succeeds, the syndicate will be one of im mense strength in the railroad intetests of Mexico. It has rep resentatives and influences in Denver, New Orleans, St. Louis, Kansas City or Mexico and Chihuahua. AT MBS. GEO. lilLliKU'H, fitT 1U JOL W OF THE OCCIDENTAL THEATER.
